Perfect for PC and Mac together
My desktop consists of a laptop PC running Vista, and an Apple MacBook running OS X Snow Leopard. Using this box, I use one keyboard, one monitor, and one mouse to use each computer, one at a time. Each computer has its lid closed, which is sometimes called “clamshell” mode.Because the software that ships with the box is only compatible with Windows, this only means that you have to use the switches on the top of the box to switch from Mac to PC. If you wanted to connect 2 PCs instead, you could use the hotkey on your keyboard to switch between the two, without using the physical switches. The only problem I found was that the picture from the MacBook would always appear about an inch offset to the right on my monitor, each time I switched the box to the Mac. I corrected this initially by pressing the “AUTO” button on my monitor, so that the picture moved to the correct place on the screen. However, I found that the resolution wasn’t as good as on the MacBook itself. To solve these 2 problems, I bought another cable that connects the Mac monitor output (DVI mini connector) directly to my monitor’s DVI input (my monitor has both VGA and DVI inputs, luckily), so I’m not routing the Mac’s video through the box at all. Using this cable, the picture always appears in the correct place on the screen, and the resolution is much better – in fact, it’s a perfect picture. As the KVM box is now only being used for one monitor input, I could have then connected the monitor’s VGA input directly to the PC, but this would have meant manually switching the monitor every time when going from Mac to PC or from PC to Mac. As I have it set up, the monitor automatically switches to the Mac when I press the “Mac” switch on the box, because the box is switching through nothing to the monitor’s VGA input, and in these circumstances, the monitor is clever enough to switch to its DVI input. When I press the “PC” button, the mouse and keyboard are switched, but I need to press the “INPUT” button on my monitor to select the VGA input from the PC. This setup is not ideal, but it works well. The box itself is compact and easy to set up. There is a decent 2-page PDF manual on the disk that explains how to use it. I don’t think the manufacturer’s spec mentions this, but each switch contains a green LED that flashes while switching is going on (about a few seconds) and then lights solidly to show you which computer is selected. This is the best setup for running a Mac and a PC with minimum desk clutter. One final note for people who are hoping to use an existing USB keyboard with a Mac: you may find some of the keys don’t work as expected (or do nothing at all). You may be able to find a software solution to this on your Mac, or you may end up (like I did) buying an external Mac keyboard instead.

Nearly flawless – excellent value
Switching can take a few seconds and occasionally one of the connected laptops, the one running Vista, flips back into local screen mode while it is not the machine being used. This is easily remedied by cycling the display (the familiar Fn F7 or Fn F8 or some similar combination on most laptops) and does not happen often enough to be a real irritation. I am running a desktop XP machine, a Vista laptop and an XP laptop through the switch and it is a blessing. Video quality on a high-spec BenQ 24 inch monitor at 1920×1200 is indistinguishable from a direct connection. The StarTech runs cool and, in my case at least, requires no external power – hoorah! All installations proceeded without need for the supplied software, which I have not yet bothered to investigate. There was a bit of a delay during auto-installation in some cases which made me think things were not working; but they were. Have not tried the audio but confident it will work. The switch looks a bit untidy with the cables to the monitor, mouse and keyboard coming out of the front, but this is the price of having such a compact unit. Overall very satisfied especially as this is a cheap example of such a KVM switch. This StarTech product makes my life easier every day, came with all the cables it needs of decent quality and reasonable length, and causes no trouble – what more to ask? I don’t think any of the drawbacks are severe enough to withhold the final star, particularly at the price.

Poor Reliability
2 port USB KVM switch kit with Audio and cables, bought on 22-3-2019, today is 26-10-2020.this is the second unit I have bought and each one has failed in the same way, it does NOT recognize either PC.Of coarse it always happens at the most inconvenient time, when searching for software problems.I was disappointed with lifetime of first unit but bought second for convenience of not having to struggle replacing all the cables. If StarTech would like to take my units for quality tests I would happily accept a more reliable unit from them.

What a great little device!
I was a little unhappy about the push to purchase a new computer (Windows XP support being withdrawn) and was wondering if there was such a simple switching device to enable me to still use either my old computer or the newly purchased desktop model (Windows 7) – without having to phaff about in small spaces swapping the cables around [for the monitor, keyboard and mouse]. And sure enough… indeed there was! A KVM switch (this one to be precise).By pressing the device button connected to the relevant computer, all of these devices (monitor, keyboard, mouse, even any attached speakers) switch to that computer’s signals. No software needs to be installed, and once setup, each computer only requires the first power-up in order to work out how the cabling has been re-wired. Personally, I prefer only having one computer on at any one time, but it appears that you could have both switched on (I’m convinced I’d blow a fuse…or melt something else from having the wrong fuse!)As a side note – I agree with people complaining about the awkwardness of where to put such a small device with such a medley of supplied cables radiating from it – this can partly be resolved by piling up a few, rarely used tomes/books, along with the box it came in (I was running out of ideas) and situate it behind the monitor (so long as there is still a bit of a gap for air to circulate). Then place the whole lot on top, and drape the cables over the sides. This results in the cables looking abit more organised and the main KVM buttons are more easily accessible.

Works as expected, USB powered, no external power required. It would be GREAT to have an ON/OFF button though, cuz it is not always being used 100% of the time. An ON/OFF button could possible extend its life span by a lot. Just a thought.Nevertheless, great compact KVM that just works.
