A Daily Telegraph and Observer Children’s Book of the Year
Described as ‘an utter gem’ by the Telegraph, this exquisitely illustrated picture book with die-cut flaps follows the woodland ramblings of Mouse through the change in seasons.
Written in a gentle rhyme that reflects the slow pace of Mouse’s rambling journey, and illustrated in the inimitable style of Alice Melvin, Mouse’s Wood is a heart-warming celebration of slow living in nature.
The story follows Mouse, who first ventures out in wintry January to visit his friend Squirrel. Mouse moves on to wake up Hedgehog for the arrival of spring and as he continues along the path in the wood, Mouse’s journey from friend to friend maps out the changes in seasons from January through to December, from picnicking among the bluebells with Mole in May and picking berries with Dormouse in June, to taking refuge in Fox’s cozy caravan as winter draws in.

Beautiful illustrations
Not much story line but it helps children learn about the changing seasons as well as learning the months of the year.My 4 year old loved reading the story. There is lots to talk about in the illustrations and he really enjoyed opening the flaps to the different animals’ homes (although we did discuss that animals don’t really live in homes like the ones pictured). It is a gorgeous book which I am sure we will return to regularly.

Absolutely beautiful!
The illustrations in this book are so so beautiful. So much detail to look at! Love spotting different birds within the trees and I want to live in one of the animals houses myself! They are adorable. The flaps are great. Lovely words. Great imformation pages at the end about what to find in nature for each month. There is nothing not to like about this book. I love it!

Absolutely gorgeous illustrations and lovely rhyming text. Bought for a little one not yet old enough to appreciate it but all adults who’ve seen it have said how wonderful it is.

My children (2, 4, 6 years old) instantly delighted in this new book. There is a precious rhyming storyline and rich illustrations which are lovely in every detail, capturing all of our attention and curiosity. This is simple, rich childrenâs literature which will shape young affections for true beauty and adventure. It is an instant treasure to any childrenâs library, deserving recognition among the likes of Brambly Hedge. Thank you, Alice Melvin. We will surely follow Mouse on his other journeys.

This is a sketch of a small mouseâs home wood throughout each season. The adorable illustrations and beautiful lift the flaps leave you wanting more!Pages are nice and feel good. Sturdy hardcover exterior with dust jacket. I do wish the flaps were sturdier- they are simply the same paper used throughout the book- as such this is for an older child or adult. Itâs so beautiful I purchased for myself (nearly 40) as a keepsake to pass down in the future. I can look at the lovely illustrations for hoursI love the little homes and the critters in their cute English clothing â¤ï¸
