Works with Lenovo P50
In these Covid-19 times of working from home, I wanted a 3 monitor setup just as I have at the office. Even though my P50 laptop is quite old, this Startech docking station is working beautifully via the Thunderbolt port. I have 3 x 1080 standard HD monitors (sorry I could not test 4K) and I am running Windows 10 OS and I did not need to install any drivers. Please note that the P50 does not charge via Thunderbolt so it still needs the main PSU, which I knew about prior to purchase, so no demerits from me here!

Be warned: 1) Dead(ish) on Arrival, 2) Received refurbished unit as new 3) Compatibility Problem
The story starts, with a unit that was dead on arrival. We returned it. UPDATE: We found the replacement unit also wantingSymptoms:- The PC did not recognize/register the unit (not typical sound, nothing in device manager, even after a scan etc.)- An RJ45 cable connected to a live router did not succeed in showing any LEDs on the RJ45 port- Monitors plugged into the unit would not register a signal- The only life I could detect: A USB fan plugged into the Type A port, would power up, as long as type-C USB was NOT connected.Debugging:- Using a calibrated multi-meter, I measured the power supply. It appears OK (registered 20.4V)- I tried a different power supply: Unit still fails to “wake up”- There also is NO LED on the outside indicating the power status. :(It appears the equipment has some internal error. Could be a ground fault, short circuit, etc.2) PROBABLY A REFURBISHED UNIT….- As I initially opened the box, I noticed the plastic seal had been broken. :(- On inspection after I found the unit didn’t work, I found a barcode sticker LPN WE…. Those are stickers, I usually see on units coming from the Amazon warehouse. I am quite sure, I ordered a NEW unit.- I confirmed with on online search (LPN Labels amazon) that these labels seem to be used when units are broken. I read:”Typically LPN labels are used internally with warehouses for practical reasons to define a location to which merchandise is allocated. Amazonâs purpose is to ensure used unfulfillable products do not re-enter the pipeline and mistakenly mixed with new products. Because LPN products are not to be commingled with sellable products, they are moved to another location.”SOMEONE appears to be shipping DODGY equipment:I strongly suspect that either Amazon or StarTech is sending out refurbished units as if they are NEW. Is this is a mistake or intentional. Either way: BE WARNED. This is a LOUSY customer experience that erodes trust.3) Compatibility issue:We received a replacement unit. The unit DOES work with certain USB3.0/3.1 ports, but not all PCs we tested. Competing products from CableMatters, DELL, and Plugable do work across the board. It appears that this StarTech chipset/design is very sensitive. It may not be fully standard compliant as there appears to be a compatibility issue where competing products simply work. The replacement unit has also been returned.

Great dock, but does not work with G-Sync monitors
I bought this device to connect my Macbook Pro 2017 13″ (2 thunderbold 3 ports) to my Dell S2417DG 144Hz G-Sync monitor. Upon setting it up, I had no issues installing the most up to date DisplayLink driver (version 5.2), and had connected my monitor initally via HDMI with success. I then attempted to connect my monitor with a DisplayPort cable, and found that my monitor was not detected at all.I proceeded to contact StarTech support, who suggested trying an alternative PC, different DisplayPort cable, and even trying to install the DisplayLink drivers with the dock connected or disconnected. Neither of these worked, and I was told the unit may be defective. Upon obtaining a replacement device from Amazon, I found that the replacement also had the same issue. This meant that it was highly likely that the DisplayPort did not work at all on these devices (given I had been through two of them), the DisplayLink driver did not work, or that my monitor was the issue. Luckily I have two 27″ 2K Dell monitors at work with which I could connect the dock using DisplayPort, which worked, and proved that the dock was not the problem. This meant that the problem lied with either my monitor, or an incompatibility of the DisplayLink drivers and my monitor. With a bit of online investigation, I found multiple reports on DisplayLinks forums of docks not detecting Nvidia G-Sync monitors, and even found reports of them not working with my monitor specifically. These reports date back to 2018, with a bit of contact from DisplayLink employees themselves. It seems, however, that no progress has been made to resolve this issue, and the lack of open source code from DisplayLink meant I could not even investigate the issue myself. There’s definitely a possibility of this being resolved in future by the DisplayLink team, but for now the dock does not satisfy my use case for my setup. Leaving as 4/5 stars as the dock is otherwise perfect!
