Modern & Minimalist
After hours of arguing with my partner, who wanted a completely invisible smoke alarm, regardless of whether it could actually save lives in a fire, we compromised with this. Itâs obviously not invisible, but the closest I could find. Plain, modern and minimalist, with only a small brand logo and vent holes on its face. The permanent 10 year battery makes it easy to install, and means we wonât be having that stupid conversation again for a decade.

Good Linked Smoke Alarm System – Easy Setup
I initially purchased the Interlinked Smoke Alarm and Hub, along with an additional Smoke Alarm, last year. Unfortunately, I encountered the same issue as many other customers, where the hub was a newer version than the additional smoke alarm, though it was compatible with the smoke alarm that came with the hub. Fortunately, upon contacting Meross, they confirmed that this was an issue with the versions being sold last year. They promptly rectified the situation and issued a refund for the smoke alarm with the older firmware version. I now have two smoke alarms of the same version and a compatible hub, and everything is functioning perfectlyâthanks to the support staff at Meross for their assistance. The hub and alarms are straightforward to set up and seamlessly integrate into Apple HomeKit if you use it. The test feature from your phone works effectively, allowing you to hear the alarms individually and check the battery percentage indicator. Some users have mentioned that the alarms aren’t loud enough during tests, but this is because the test is only intended to confirm connectivity and functionality at a lower level with different sound. As per the instructions, pressing and holding the physical button on each smoke alarm for over 10 to 15 seconds (can’t remember how long) increases the volume to its maximum decibel level, and they are adequately loud, comparable to most smoke alarms.I have one smoke alarm in my kitchen and another on my upstairs landing. The kitchen alarm was triggered once due to a household member burning something while cooking, and it was very loud. I received an alert on my phone indicating smoke in the kitchen, and the upstairs alarm also went off. The alarms are performing their intended functions effectively. If you use HomeKit, you can set an automation to turn on all your HomeKit lights and lamps when any smoke alarm goes off, which is useful in case any fire happens at night and you need to see where you are going, providing additional peace of mind.I have not experienced any false alarms over the past two months of using these alarms. I hope this continues, and I definitely recommend these interlinked alarms.

GS559A Smart smoke alarm with hub. + 7 more GS559A interlinked smoke alarms.
UPDATE: 31-3-2024 After nearly a year I’m sincerely regretting choosing this alarm system. There have been far too many times when one or a few of the alarms have gone off without any reason, what’s more I didn’t get any notification on my phone. Once while we were away on holiday I was woken by the Meros app on my phone at 2am. Which incidentally is the only time the app has notified me of anything. Fortunately I also have some security cameras and was able to see there was no fire or smoke. Good job I didn’t call the fire brigade otherwise they’d have smashed down a door to get in.All 8 of them are now going to come out and I shall try and find something else that actually works as intended. Whether or not I can get a refund remains to be seen. It’s a shame as it would be a good system if it was reliable.I had been searching for a fire alarm system to replace my 13 year old interlinked system and eventually stumbled upon the Meross which met my requirements which were as follows.1. All alarms should sound if there is a fire. (Interlinked)2. If I was away from home I would get a notification telling me the house was on fire. After all, if there’s no one there to hear the alarm no one will summon the fire brigade. The only downside is that if the phone is set to silent you won’t hear any notifications and I haven’t found any way round this yet. However, if the Government can have a warning App that overrides (I believe) the silent mode it must be possible.3. Replaceable batteries. There is no law stating that fire alarms have to be replaced after 10 years. So long as they are kept dust free there is no reason why they shouldn’t last longer. It appears the reasoning behind 10 years is purely because the sensor could become inefficient due mainly to dust or a component could fail. Incidentally I have left my old interlinked system in place as it still works OK.4. When it detects smoke it is very loud, much louder than when in test mode. The pitch also varies which for me is very important as I have trouble hearing high pitch sounds and I can’t even hear some alarms they are so high pitched.5. They are affordable so I didn’t skimp and installed 8 fire alarms, ideally there should be one in each room. I covered every location that has, or could have electronic equipment, as that is the most likely source of any fire in our house.First I made the mistake of reading the manual and getting totally confused, except for the part about installing the App and following instructions. Hopefully this review will help you.The tiny matchbox sized hub is the part that communicates with all the smoke alarms and sends a notification to your router if there is a fire. I would advise locating it fairly centrally relative to all the smoke detectors. However initially plug it in near your router and pair it up with all the smoke alarms. During Setup it needs to be briefly connected to your phone in the same way you would connect your wireless router to your phone in Settings/WiFi. You select your WIFi’s name and tell it your WIFi’s password.I used an Android phone and Installed the Meross App.Open the App and on the home page click the + symbol in the top right.Scroll down until you see “Smart Sensor and Alarm” and tap that. You should now see the GS559A smoke alarm so tap that.NOTE: You use this for installing the hub AND the smoke alarm, read the text at the bottom of the page and tap that if you have already installed the Hub, otherwise tap Next.Just follow the instructions in the App to keep adding smoke alarms after you have installed the Hub.Should you need to re-set one of the smoke alarms there is a QR code in the manual that takes you to a video showing you. I re-set all mine as I set them up as you never know if someone else has linked it to a different Hub.Now you can fit all the fire alarms where needed and locate the hub to a suitable location. The downside to the system is that you won’t get a notification if the power goes off and your Hub or Router stop working. Also, if the Hub stops working the alarms won’t be interlinked. As our area often experiences power cuts and blips I have installed UPS devices on the router and in my office for the computer. Unfortunately I don’t yet have the Hub plugged into a UPS, it’s a shame that there isn’t a battery backup in the Hub for such emergencies, as in my opinion electrical items are the most likely source of fire and when they go wrong they could also throw the main trip for the property. The main purpose of a fire alarm is to save lives, saving your property is a bonus. I’m impressed with this system as it allows both. The App allows you to test the alarms directly, no need to run around pressing buttons. You can also see the state of the battery for each alarm installed and get low battery alerts. You can turn on/off alerts for Smoke, High temperature, Device malfunction, Low battery but they should all be on unless you have a good reason to turn one off. Which could be installing one in the kitchen, in which case you would perhaps turn off Smoke as most kitchen alarms are heat sensitive. That’s something I hadn’t realised when I bought the system so I’ll get another for the kitchen. The location name for each alarm can also be changed in the App. It’s a good idea to write the proposed location on the back of each alarm as you set them up, otherwise you could have 8 on the table and not know which one goes where. I used a Dymo label printer for that.I hope this review was helpful.

So while I love the Nest smoke alarms, having considering a second mortgage just to change the batteries (again), I decided to look for something else.As a both an Apple and Meross user, these seemed to fit the bill.Easy to install (although instructions are naff as others have said) with two normal AA batteries, my biggest concern is the volume.I am not convinced that in the event of a fire, these alarms would necessarily wake the household.Another personal bugbear, Meross have a range of heat, smoke and Co2 alarms and demonstrate Apple HomeKit compatibility, why is there yet to be a model combining all these features
