All flash and no substance
As a teacher, I am really saddened that this product would even be sold. I bought it for my son who is in the early stages of learning to read. I bought it because I had been impressed with the coding versions.I cannot believe that there were any educationalists involved in the creation of the app that goes with the letters. The first red flag was that the words used in the app are all in uppercase – despite the letters having both an upper and a lowercase version in the tiles. In the most basic activity, children are asked to identify the starting letter (not sound) of words. A picture is displayed and a voice says the word (with mispronunciation, including guttural âgâs – the way they are pronounced in German or Afrikaans), the remaining letters are shown as well. For example, a picture of a cookie, the word âcookieâ is said and âOOKIEâ is written on the screen with a blank space for the child to insert the âCâ.Apart from the all caps and poor pronunciation, the bigger problem is that children are not identifying the starting sound. So for example, when presented with âshoeâ, children should have to identify âshâ. Instead, there is only space for the âsâ.Level 1 got boring quickly, so my son decided to try level 2. He literally went from being shown a picture of a chicken and having to identify the âcâ as the starting letter (ð¡ it should have been âchâ) to being shown a picture of a chicken and having to spell the entire word. The first word he was asked to spell was âchickenâ – one may think âcatâ or âhatâ may be a more appropriate starting point. There was absolutely no scaffolding.I think the technology is clever and has great potential but the application is not educationally sound and, in my opinion, does more harm to a childâs reading journey than good.

Meine Töchter wollten nie Kopfrechnen oder das 1×1 üben. Klar. Dann habe ich Osmo Numbers entdeckt – und schon hatte ich sie am Wickel ;-)Die beiden spielen jetzt seit Monaten immer wieder das Spiel, merken dabei aber gar nicht, dass sie Mathe machen. Toll!

If youâre a homeschool household or just want your kids to love to learn and have fun doing it, this is a great resource! We bought this for our 4 year old, now 5 but honestly even the older kids have fun helping her with the Osmo learning games. Iâve pursued so many more Osmo learning accessories because this is w that keeps on giving. I think itâs reasonable priced for the quality and hours of fun this gives to kiddos. Easy to follow set up and very self explanatory for the kids. My daughter was 4 when purchased, is not 5 and using it still as if it her first time. Games, accessories, and add ons are always available so this really grows with your child, and thereâs something to all ages, even my husband and I play along! I know it works with iPad and I believe android tablets as well. This was a great purchase and so worth it. I canât wait to keep adding to our fun on osmos and watching my child growth and learn!
