This device + RaspberryPi = cheap and powerful NAS!
Makes backing up systems extremely easy and you can use hard drives like disk drives and hot swap while the computer is on. Speed is good and device is sturdy and well made. Works plug and play on Windows and Linux (havenât tried mac but sure itâd work) and can be used as a boot drive to quickly recover from a drive crash or corrupted system. Donât know how I lived without it. Looks like a toaster ð paired with a RaspberryPi, you can make an extremely fast, feature rich and reliable NAS/Cloud server/time machine network backup for 1/4 the price of a ready made NAS and 10x the features. Works with 3.5â and 2.5â HDD and SSD. With HDDs, the disks never completely spin down which makes accessing files quicker but does create some noise. Also the drives can get hot, I have a square case fan powered by my RaspberryPi 5v GPIO pins to keep it cool.

Work great
They work great with laptop and desktop hard drives. I have found a minor thing if you have two desktop hard drives in they can lean abit they stay connected but on can lean so I made a little device to keep them apart and upright. They are easy to use and set up plus hot swop. They are worth the money. The power adapter is not bad in length.

Does exactly what I need for a great price
Great product for the simple needs of most home users. Delivered the next day, and worked straight out of the box. Does exactly what I need which is to more easily access a mix of existing 3.5 and 2.5 inch discs for backup and for mirrored archive.Looking at some of the other reviews: it is delivered with a UK plug so donât worry about that. Yes you hear the 3.5 inch disks spinning but you always do so and I donât need them on all the time. And quality is fine for day to day home office use. Some pointers: No this is not a RAID device but it does not claim to be. Like me you will probably have to use Disk Manager to assign a drive letter before your PC will recognise the drives – easy done. This is not as âhot drive removalâ as they claim – remove a drive and they all uncounted so you have to switch off and on again! The PC sees this as a series of removable disks so Windows does not allow you to span or stripe two disks as one volume.Great product.

Works well, good cloning too
Bought to replace a USB2 single dock, which dislikes the USB-C/TB4 in my laptop. Works fine, and the cloning in the dock – Win10 OS SSD drive to a smaller SSD – was completely painless and just worked. No slower than doing it the hard way with Acronis, no boot or other issues.

Multi function and just works great
Used as both a docker and is great at hot swapping both platter drives and SSD’s – transfer rate of 480gb around 36MB / secThe clone function works perfectly, source in upper slot, destination in lower. Unplug unit from USB and hit the button. If the destination is larger than source, just expand in Disk Management to utilise the unused space once cloning complete.Well worth the money for the functionality and does not tie up the host PC when cloning.Recommended

The product worked well first time and I didn’t have a single problem.
I had been using desktop machines for many years and has simply put my old disks into the machine so that I could use the old disks. Having now changed to a laptop that option was no longer possible, but using this product I can now continue to use my old disks for storage.Good product!

Not for critical operation. Keep important data away.
Very light-duty, but may be acceptable and convenient to keep a couple drives together and store a media library or other replaceable data. TV/Console/Home Theatre, etc.Biggest problem: Some 3.5″ drive combinations do not initialise (when paired); maybe inrush current too high for the included power adapter.I ordered 2x of these after being very satisfied with the Sabrent USB 3 to sata 2.5″ (UASP) cable. However, the units are a hollow shell of molded ABS plastic. So light and resonant that 1/4 of the weight of the unit (~95g) is a weigh-down chunk of steel internally fastened to the base of the unit. It’s now obviously a rebadged low-end run of the mill unit. There is no drive dampening whatsoever. The connectors bear the weight and vibration of the drives. All the physical guiding to insert a drive is the actual flimsy flaps, which means damaging the sata connections on the unit or the drives will only be a matter of time (crooked insertion, etc). The drives can also become trapped in the flap door on the way out, easily ripping one of the flaps like another reviewer found out.Electronics are cheap but not too bad. The controller (ASMedia ASM1156) works well enough, but may not be considered ‘reliable’ in data storage terms.Overall I don’t recommend and would not put any critical data through these. Some may think it’s worth ~£20, but I dont think it’s worth the risk.

Floppy drive bays
I had to 2-bay version of this which my only complaint was the lack of bays. As my requirements have changed, I have moved to the 4-bay version. My first impression is that HDDs are not held nearly as securely as the 2-bay model. You plug them in and they literally sag to the side and flop about. I’m a little concerned about this. I’m considering gluing something to the bay doors that will pin the drives in place as the doors are opened.Aside from this, I plugged this into my Mac and it immediately detected the drive and the connect quickly. It’s just the floppy drives that give me cause for concern. If it breaks, or I lose any data, rest assured I will be back here in a flash to lower this rating to 1-star.

I ordered the following:SABRENT USB 3.1 to SATA External Hard Drive Docking Station for 2.5 or 3.5in HDD, SSD [Includes Both Type C and Type A Cables Supports UASP and 20TB Drives] (DS-UTC1)The reason why is because I wanted the option to connect to either a USB type A or type C port.Things I couldn’t figure out before the purchase which I can now confirm are as follows.- The unit has no plugs on the front. What appears to be a plug on the front is a light.- On the back, the unit has 2 plugs. One for the proprietary power cord (standard nipple – looks like it could be easily replaced if needed). One for the USB connection which is indeed a USB C port. This is important to me since in some of the product pics, it looked like the USB connection was proprietary. It’s not. It’s a good ol’ USB C port which means I can use any appropriate cable.I use this device across computers – mainly mac and windows, and sometimes unix variants. Worked great on a mac running latest OS as of Jan 3 2022. I assume it would work on windows. I partially assume the same for unix vars but don’t take my word for it. These days, most OSs support USB mass storage devices.I have 2 old 2 TB SATA drives which were both in a RAID0 config in another device. I didn’t care about the data on them. Goal was to resurrect them and use them for storage and then once loaded, put the drives in a safe and forget about them.Plugged them in and my mac said it couldn’t read it. No problem. In disk utility, I could see the mount. I picked erase, exfat, MBR – and in about 10 seconds the drive was ready to use. This is exactly what I needed.Again, I was not concerned about keeping the data on the drives. In a scenario where you might be, I would expect the drive to properly mount and be readable assuming it has an appropriate file system / MBR loaded on it.I love how the device is small, light, and I can tote it in a backpack. An approximate $25 solution that now unlocks the use of many hard drives. I view this as an excellent cost to value scenario.Very happy with purchase.
