    Opening up new possibilities
I am really impressed with this scanner. This scanner is a fantastic piece of kit and I am barely scratching the surface with it.The kit consists of the scanner, necessary cables, a a motorised turntable, mini tripod, calibration board and scanning markers, and model to test the scanner with. The instruction booklet guides you through the setup, downloading software and basic workflows for the scanner. The scanner itself is easy to use, but I would advise that you be patient. Take everything slowly and make sure you have a clear area to work so you have enough room to move around the object you are scanning. Once again the instructions are concise but clear to help you get up and running here.In use, the scanner is easy to use, has intuitive software although it can potentially make your device work to process the data. I tried the scanner out initially scanning my face, and it was easy to do, although like most things it would have benefited from better ambient lighting as I discovered when trying the scanner later. The scanner did pick up the details in my face including my beard, and the bags under my eyes…Personally, I think this is a fantastic piece of kit and opens up a whole range of possibilities from scanning and preserving objects, helping with CAD, and opening up a whole range of options for digital art and 3D printing. After seeing some of my woodworking acquaintances be upset because they lost a record of work they created such as carving or turning pieces, with a tool like this the work could be preserved and replicated with 3D printing.I am looking forward to the possibilities that this scanner will open up, helping to preserve my 3D artwork and models. I also think I can have some fun by putting my friends faces on some model conversions. A personalised model conversion could be interesting…

    Spot on piece of kit
Incredible piece of kit that literally includes everything you would need to start 3D scanning and taking a step up when it even comes to 3D design or 3D printing. It’s basically a plug and play of course requiring software to get it going but then after it’s as straight forward as the videos show, I will say in some aspects there is a potential learning curve to get everything bang on but patience is key when using this, it can also scan in colour but if you wanted to scan a person do be careful as it then turns into a strobe light which may cause some damage to your eyes depending on the sensitivity of them.Creating a model can easily be cleaned up in the software and a handy feature is it has a tracking mode for key features so you shouldn’t really have any empty spots on the model you are making depending on what it is of course, I do like that a little model is included as a starting point to help get into using this as a little practice tool.Files can be exported directly to STL files for 3D printing which is fantastic if you wanted to just get straight into printing, or can be made into obj files for further tweaks depending on whatever is easier and other software you use for modelling.Would 100% recommend this for anybody big into 3D design or 3D printing its something that has definitely helped with models that I create and sell.

Entry level hobbyist scanner that works great for getting reference scans for CAD work.
This scanner arrived in a very professional looking revopoint branded cardboard box featuring a diagram of the scanner on the top. After removing the clear plastic wrap and popping the lid off the box you’re greeted with everything you need to get up and running with the scanner.Inside the box you get the scanner itself, the necessary cables, a motorised turntable, a small tripod/handle, an instruction booklet, a 9cm tall test scan model and a bunch of accessories that are made for calibration and making scans easier. Everything is packed into individually labelled bags and the delicate bits are placed into a very soft custom foam insert that had no issues keeping everything safe during shipping.Everything is built to a high standard and there are no defects, creaks, wobbles or any other concerns on a single piece. The basic setup is very simple, download the app for your computer or mobile device and connect the scanner via the provided cable or Wi-Fi. Though keep in mind you’ll need to provide power via the USB cable with a power bank for portable setups. Once you’ve got that sorted you can start playing around with the device and software. I’d strongly recommend setting aside ample time to get to grips with the process if it’s your first attempt at hobbyist grade scanners.I’m fairly used to using the Revopoint ecosystem as I’ve also got a Range scanner, so I had this up and running and produced a reasonable scan of the test model within 15–20 minutes, including the time it took to calibrate and update the firmware. If you’re looking for good-enough scans for CAD work then it’s not that hard to get started, but you’ll spend days and weeks going down the rabbit hole if you’re a perfectionist looking for crisp & highly detailed scans.I’ve always had the best success with the desktop application and it’s my bread and butter when it comes to scanning objects that I’m physically able to bring near my desktop. The mobile app itself works well enough if you’re just looking to get some quick portable scans of objects, but I haven’t had great reliability with the WiFi connection in general. I’d suggest buying the Revopoint Inspire mobile kit with the special split power and data USB cable that lets you avoid the WiFi connection altogether.I frequently make 3D printable objects that are made to interface & function in combination with the dimensions of a real world item and as a result I need the dimensions in CAD. Before I got the Revopoint Range (my first scanner) I would manually measure things with various tools. With the scans from the Inspire and Range I’ve been able to optimise my workflow and being able to directly reference an accurate scan inside a CAD program is invaluable. Especially when recreating a real-world object with complex shapes for 3D printing modifications, cases or mounts etc. This is very much still in the ‘older’ generation of handheld scanners using IR light, so it’s very reliant on softer ambient light and it will struggle in direct sunlight or with glossy surfaces or dark colouring without a matting spray. You’d have to shell out 2-3x the money for the fancier blue-light scanners if you wanted to get around these limitations. But with a couple LED lamps indirectly lighting the model you can light things up well enough to give great results, but on some objects you’ll have no choice but to bust out the marking stickers and scanning spray to get good results. I’ve had good luck using talcum powder and/or cans of foot spray to give better scans on reflective or dark surfaces and it’s much cheaper than the real scanning sprays. For human scans adding talcum powder to hair can give much cleaner results if the person has naturally shiny hair or a darker hair colour that doesn’t show up well.At the current price of £357 with a 15% off voucher bringing it down to £303, this is a reasonable introductory scanner that performs well, given you’ve got realistic expectations. The only concern I really have is that the consumer grade scanners have started to move into a newer generation with blue-light and these infrared scanners are starting to fall behind. But with the new generation comes additional cost, so if you’re not willing to drop closer to £1000-1500 for the latest and greatest, this a very good way to get your foot in the door of 3D scanning.

A good scanner at a good price, a bit fiddly
This scanner came with the main camera, a tripod, and a turntable. It also came with some spotty flat surfaces for calibration. It was easy to put together.I would have liked it to also include a power supply – you need two USB ports for this, one for the camera and one for the turntable. It took me a while to get reasonable results from this. I found my kitchen table with a clear space worked best in the end.I am reasonably happy with the results, but I feel the price is too high for the quality (and effort).
