Tacky poster on the box, good film
This is a well-crafted and absorbing film – a lot better than the tacky poster on the box would suggest – and it has some interesting ideas on how telepathy might work. The famous exploding head scene comes quite early on. The secret of Dr. Ruth’s sinister plan, and Revok’s world domination plan, are reserved to the last quarter of an hour. And there’s a tacky bloodbath at the end to remind everyone it’s a David Cronenberg epic. I enjoyed it in a cinema when it was released and I also enjoyed seeing it again via DVD.

I’m a big fan of David cronenberg films especially scanners, one of my favouritesthere’s been more than one DVD release of scanners over the past 12 yearsthe first release is 2001 region 1 U.S. release by MGM with no extras at alland then came the 2005 Anchor bay U.K. release which had pretty good picture and audio quality presentationwith only a 10min featurette about the making of scanners by a U.K. film criticwhich was average plus a Documentary on David cronenberg films which was the only best extra on the DVDthis Doco had interviews with some of the Actors from his filmsand then many years later 2012,a German distributor SUBKULTUR released a DVD/BLU-RAY set which i boughtthis only had an interview with stephen Lack and a audio commentary track by a film criticwhich ended up being German commentary, so it was a waste of moneyand now a U.K. company SECOND SIGHT have released a special edition of scanners on DVD and Blu-raywhich i bought on the day it was released, DVD and Blu-rayfor any David cronenberg fan or scanners fan, this SECOND SIGHT release is the best special editionrelease of SCANNERS you’ll ever get, it’s been a long time coming aswellboth versions are in widescreen, the DVD quality is excellent about 8/10the blu-ray picture and audio quality is better about 10/10i’ve seen the film many timesSo the special features are the main reason i bought the second sight releaseit’s the best special features you’ll ever get, never before released interviewswith Stephen Lack (Cameron vale), in depth 20min interview, excellent interviewInterview with Executive producer Pierre David, his Interview was brilliant, very in depthPierre talked about the making of the film, the Actors involved, the production etc.Interviews with Cinematographer Mark Irwinand Make up effects artist Stephen Dupoisand also a interview with Actor Lawrence Dane, only goes for 5minsvery unfortunate that David cronenberg was not interviewed for this second sight releasei emailed second sight about that, they replied back to me saying they did ask him but he refused an interviewhe Declined and interview about this film for some reasonthe interview with Pierre David was the next best thing his interview explains alot about the filmand David cronenbergSo Both DVD and Blu-ray have the same extras, so it doesn’t matter which one you buybut the picture and audio quality is outstanding, fantastic on this second sight releasebetter then the old 2005 Anchor bay U.K. release which you might aswell sell if you have itthat’s still being sold on amazon uk which is pointless buying, this second sight release is betterthe DVD is region 2 PAL ofcourse and the blu-ray is region B,so you do need a region free player for both Discsinfo for any American David cronenberg fans reading this reviewso for any scanners fan or David cronenberg fan,definitely buy this second sight release of scanners on DVD or blu-ray, it’s up to youscrap the old releases like the 2005 Anchor bay release which is pointless buying now.get the second sight release instead, way better and definitely worth the money

If you enjoy John Carpenter flicks such as they live then YOU WILL LOVE THIS! As i said “cult film at it’s finest”. A bit dated of course but what do you expect from 1981.

Interesting Movie!
Scanners (1981) is one of those movies that completely passed me by for years. I knew of the film, about a certain scene that takes place near the beginning and the reputation of David Cronenberg. Until now, I had only seen two of his films, those including the classic, The Fly and Videodrome. With the this stunning bluray out, I thought that I’d finally take the gamble. I’m quite glad that I did.The film was originally released in January of 1981. It was produced by Claude Héroux, features music from Howard Shore (best known for his work on Lord of the Rings) and some nice cinematography from Mark Irwin. The film is based around the idea of telepathy and those that are born with it, also known as Scanners. The films star Stephen Lack is the scanner Cameron Vale. He has been used by Patrick McGoohan’s Dr. Paul Ruth to help find and capture the scanner cult leader Darryl Revok, expertly played by the great Michael Ironside. The lead character goes through many twists and turns as he tries to accomplish his goal. It results in one intense stand off and one of the most memorable things I’ve seen in a while.As a film I thought it was fairly easy to follow. The film was slow but didn’t drag. It didn’t for me, at least. I enjoyed the idea of a telepathic terrorist, it’s certainly unique and was very well done here. Though, I personally would have liked to have seen more from that aspect of the story. There’s a number of great scenes ranging from the classic head scene, the scene where Revok escapes captivity, mind jacking the computer and the final stand off. It’s a bit of a slow burner between these moments but I felt the pay off was right on the money.The acting over all is a bit lacking. Stephen Lack’s acting is fairly wooden, the kind you would find in a typical ’80s low budget production. Jennifer O’Neill is about as bland as can be and I honestly didn’t think she contributed much to the movie at all. But It’s not all bad with the previously mentioned McGoohan and Ironside stealing the show. They have a lot of personality and come across great on screen.The bluray copy I acquired was released through Second Sight and looks fantastic. The colours are strong and the image quality is very sharp with lots of details present. I thought it looked really good on the new television, a lot better than I was expecting. I did find however that the sound was a bit lacking. According to the box, the film is presented in stereo and in surround. But both options felt a bit flat and had no real impact, even in the more action orientated scenes.Whilst I wouldn’t say Scanners is ever going to be a favourite of mine, I could certainly see me returning to it every now and again. It is a very well made movie and has aged well, for the most part. It’s certainly one for those who enjoy those crazy ’80s horror flicks and could make for a great double bill with the previously mentioned, The Fly.

Blow Your Mind
Scanners was notorious at its time of release for the exploding head sequence. A scene the late great Kenny Everett spoofed on his television show.This film along with Rabid, The Brood and Dead Ringers cemented David Cronenbergs name as a master of urban horror.Any film that can get a restrained performance from the normally vigorous Michael Ironside has to be worth checking out. He is actually rather good in this. For me the excellent Patrick McGoohan is what lifts this very original film above the rank of a mere gorefest. If your a thinking mans horror fan add this to your stash. Its excellent.

Es una excelente edicion en DIGIPACK de CC.Estaba indeciso entre pedir esta pelicula o VIDEODROME que es un semi digipack pero que a fin de cuenta es una caja normal con slipcover, y pues incluso en material bonus, esta pelicula es superior ya que trae una de las primeras peliculas de Cronenberg entre sus materiales bonus y una enorme serie de entrevistas.

Eine Untergrundbewegung von Scannern (Menschen mit telepathischen und telekinetischen Fähigkeiten) strebt die Weltherrschaft an. Eine dubiose und machthungrige Firma nimmt im Auftrag der Regierung den Kampf auf und setzt ihrerseits einen Scanner auf den Anführer des Untergrunds (Michael Ironside) an. Cronenbergs Film offenbahrt dem Zuschauer eine paranoide Welt, indem jeder aus einer gesellschaftlichen Randgruppe überwacht und abgehört (in diesem Falle gescannt) werden kann. Die unsichtbare Bedrohung ist jederzeit spürbar und überträgt sich auch auf den Zuschauer. Paralellen zu Orwells “1984” sind erkennbar. Der Film baut seine Spannung eher schleichend auf und ist nicht im Bereich Action oder Horror angesiedelt, obwohl er durchaus auch Elemente aus diesen Genres enthält. Cronenberg zeigt erneut das Bild von machthungrigen Wissenschaftlern deren Arbeit aus dem Ruder läuft und dessen Schaden kaum eingedämmt werden kann (wie auch in “Rabid” oder “Die Fliege”). Auch die Kritik an Politik und Gesellschaft ist typisch für die Filme des Kanadiers. Der Inhalt des Films kann überzeugen, die technische Seite der Blu-Ray nur bedingt. Während die Bildqualität akzeptabel ist (zumindest für einen Film aus den frühen 80ern), kann der Ton weitaus weniger überzeugen. Der DTS-Ton enthält fast durchgehend ein deutlich hörbares Hintergrundrauschen.Fazit: Starker Cronenberg-Klassiker mit Schwächen im Soundbereich, mit dem man letztlich leben kann (oder muÃ). Die 5-Sterne-Wertung bezieht sich daher ausschlieÃlich auf den Film und nicht auf die technische Seite dieser Blu-Ray.

Despite it’s low budget, David Cronenberg’s Scanners is a great horror film and remains a personal favorite. Tracking down this Canadian cult classic has been difficult, so I’m happy to finally own a good copy for my collection at a reasonable cost. I first saw Scanners just after it was released on Pay TV in the 80’s when I taped it onto VHS. 35 years later, it’s now a part of my movie library on DVD! A difficult movie to find – many fans will no doubt be thankful to Criterion for finally releasing it with a slew of extras. That being said, Criterion DVD’s are very expensive, so I looked into some cost saving alternatives…Tracking down a movie can be an adventure, rather than purchasing the pricey Criterion version, I opted to save myself some money. I took a chance and imported my copy of Scanners from the U.K. in PAL format. The version I own is a 2013 DVD release in 16×9 Anamorphic widescreen, running 99 minutes, and is released by Second Sight Films. The print quality is excellent, and the disc also includes 5 special bonus features – which differ from the Criterion release. The disc is region 2, so you need a multi-region player to play it. I am sure the Criterion release of this film is fantastic, but in this particular case, I didn’t want to spend $45 or more! I still occasionally will splurge on a film, but these days, it’s becoming rarer. I was able to buy my copy of Scanners for about $12, including shipping. Scanners is a movie I really wanted, call it a guilty pleasure if you will, and at this price I couldn’t be happier. These days I’m looking to the U.K. more and more to find rare titles at reasonable prices. I’m 100% satisfied.
