Reliable little stud finder
I’m always putting up shelves, mounting monitors and lining up picture rails, so a dependable stud finder has been overdue. The little Mecurate five in one has stepped up nicely. A single button lets me scroll through 19 mm timber stud, 38 mm deep stud, 60 mm metal and 50 mm live wire settings, each shown on a bright back-lit screen. When it locates something solid it emits a cheerful beep, loud enough to cut through a whirring drill.On ordinary plasterboard it’s bang on. The live wire alert has already spared the consumer unit an unexpected firework show, and that alone justifies the price in my book. Calibration takes only a moment, but you must reset it each time you lift the sensor off the wall, which slows bigger jobs when your arms are starting to ache.Accuracy tails off on double board and skim, so I still prod a bradawl in before committing a screw. Even so, the casing feels sturdy rather than toy-like and the neat pouch stops it wandering to the bottom of the toolbox.All told it’s a useful bit of safety kit. There is a modest learning curve, yet a couple of practice passes on scrap board will see you right.

Did not work but replacement is fine.
Could not switch on; defective battery? Returned it for refund and bought again. The replacement works fine. It takes some practice to calibrate and use effectively. I recommend watching videos online to understand the technique.

Doesnât work and dangerous
I needed to drill into an area of wall not far from a light switch (though outside where wires should be running per building regs). Got this device as an extra layer of safety. It initially believed most of the wall was one big AC wire. In the area where I was drilling I got different results each time I calibrated, some flagging a live wire, others with no signal. A complete waste of money and dangerous if you trust the results. Will be returning for a refund.

Works very well
I got this because I needed to locate the centre of some burried metal, but I chose this model because it allows me to find wooden studs in the wall as well. It took me a few minutes playign with it to figure out how to change the sensing mode and range but I was able to narrow down burried pipes and conduit very sucessfully

Selbst ist die Frau – das gilt auch fürs Bohren von Löchern in Wänden, um einen Kratzbaum sicher zu befestigen.In meinem Fall war ich dann eben auch selbst die Frau, die dabei ein Kabel vom Raumthermostat erwischt und damit die komplette Therme durch Ãberspannung auÃer Betrieb gesetzt hat *hihihi*Na gut, ich gebe zu, das war jetzt nicht wirklich lustig, weil im Anschluss ein Teil der Wand aufgekloppt werden musste, um den Kabelbruch zu reparieren… von dem Dreck, der Schadensmeldung für die Versicherung und die Beauftragung der Handwerkerfirmen ganz zu Schweigen.Nicht, dass ich auf die glorreiche Idee käme, solche Bohr-Arbeiten noch ein weiteres Mal in Eigenregie ausführen zu wollen; aber da scheinbar der Pizzabäcker die Leitungen verlegt hat – anders kann man wohl nicht erklären, warum diese diagonal von links unten nach rechts oben gezogen wurden – hätte ich theoretisch auch beim Bild an die Wand nageln einen Kabelbruch verursachen können.Und damit eben dies nicht passiert, habe ich mir diesem Strom-Detektor gekauft.Ich habe bewusst nach einem preisgünstigen Modell gesucht, weil ich für meine Zwecke kein Gerät für 70 ⬠oder mehr benötige.Dieses hier hat recht gute Bewertungen erhalten, so dass ich mich dafür entschieden habe.Die Bedienung ist auch für Laien leicht verständlich und sehr intuitiv. Auch wenn man der englischen Sprache nicht mächtig ist, lässt sich an Hand der aufgedruckten Symbole gut erkennen, welche Taste man für den jeweilig gewünschten Modus auswählen muss.Der Detektor erkennt Holzbalken, Wechselstrom sowie Metall.Wie zuverlässig das Gerät arbeitet kann ich natürlich nicht sicher beurteilen, aber in meinem Test hat er Stromleitungen dort erkannt, wo ich sicher weiÃ, dass sich welche befinden bzw. an Stellen, wo ich damit gerechnet habe (z.B. in der Nähe von Steckdosen) und mir “grünes Licht” an Stellen gegeben, an denen ich davon ausgehen kann, dass sich dort keine Stromleitungen befinden.Nahe Stromleitungen werden durch ein Spannungssymbol in der rechten oberen Ecke des Displays angezeigt. Legt man das Gerät direkt auf eine Leitung, gibt es zusätzlich einen lauten Signalton und die Scanner-Balken schlagen bis zum Anschlag aus.Wie schon erwähnt, mangels Erfahrung kann ich nicht beurteilen, wie empfindlich das Gerät Holzbalken, Metall oder Leitungen aufspürt. Es hat sicher einen Grund, warum es solche Detektoren in unterschiedlichen Preisklassen gibt.Aber für Menschen, die sich unsicher sind, wie bei ihnen die Leitungen verlegt sind, bietet dieses Gerät sicher einen guten Anhaltspunkt, wenn man z.B. nur ein Bild aufhängen oder ähnliche kleine Arbeiten ausführen möchte.Hätte ich dieses Gerät bereits vor dem Anbohren der Wände besessen, hätte ich mich an keiner Stelle dieser Wand getraut, hinein zu bohren und mir wäre Einiges erspart geblieben.
