Is your Ethernet cable failing to deliver the expected speed?

If a Category 6 cable fails to deliver the expected speed after termination, or only achieves 100Mbps, the primary cause is usually that the eight inner conductors within the cable are not all connected reliably. This causes network devices to automatically negotiate down to 100Mbps mode, which requires only four conductors to function. Specifically, this may be due to the following factors:

1. Mismatched RJ45 connector type: Cat 6 cables have thicker conductors (23 AWG) and require specialised Cat 6 RJ45 connectors with staggered internal metal contacts and wider slots. If Cat 5 RJ45 connectors, designed for thinner conductors, are mistakenly used, this can easily lead to poor contact, significant signal attenuation and a consequent drop in speed.2. Crimping issues: If the RJ45 connector is crimped too loosely or too tightly, it may cause the metal contacts to deform or fail to pierce the cable insulation effectively, resulting in a loose connection. If the cable sheath is not fully pushed into the RJ45 connector and secured before crimping, the wires may become loose over time, leading to an unstable connection.3. Incorrect pinout: The pinout at both ends of the RJ45 connector must comply with the T568B standard. An incorrect pinout will severely interfere with the signal, causing network devices to negotiate a reduced speed of 100Mbps.4. Damaged cable: Excessive bending, crushing or pulling during installation may damage the internal conductors, particularly causing internal breaks in the specific conductors responsible for gigabit transmission, whilst the external insulation may appear intact.5. Electromagnetic Interference: When network cables are laid parallel to or too close to 220V power lines, they are susceptible to electromagnetic interference, resulting in reduced signal quality and a forced reduction in negotiated data rates.6. Network Device Port Limitations: The connected router, switch or computer network card may itself have a 100Mbps port, or the connection between the port and the cable may be poor, thereby limiting the maximum speed.
