    expectations reached
I didn’t have high expectations of this movie, so I’m glad to say that it was very suspenseful indeed. The acting was very good and the plot kept me guessing. the only complaint is that there were a few plot holes in the story, but nevertheless, a very gripping movie.

A reasonable mish-mash of other films
Baby Call certainly caught me off-guard. Reading the synopsis I thought i’d be in for an Insiduous clone that would scare the pants off. First things first, this is not a horror by any stretch of the imagination; a little eerie perhaps at best. It’s quite an odd experience as it’s a really plodding film which left me cold and only redeemed itself in the final ten minutes. Strange really as it’s a film that I enjoyed more in hindsight rather than at the time as the ending puts together all the pieces. The overarching theme is ‘what is real and what isn’t’; is what the viewer sees simply the figments of the mother’s evidently fragile state of mind? I guess that contributed to the film’s shortcoming insomuch its deliberately ambiguous with conflicting information given to the viewer. The whole film is shot in washed-out colours; the primary locations being the imposing Soviet-style tower blocks and the equally sterile son’s school; all this accentuates the mother’s alienation and retreating from society. It’s clear that Noomi’s character is a broken woman, scarred at the hands of her violent ex-husband; clearly so too is the son. A pair of pitiful spirits rattling around in a lacklustre existence. There’s a scene near the start of the film where she interlaces her fingers with her sleeping son’s; a rather uncomfortable scene with Oedipal allusions.A faint whiff of redemption comes in the form of an equally asocial retail assistant whereupon they strike up a touching, awkward, and gentle friendship; two kindred spirits whom recognise themselves in each other. As I say, the final act puts together all the pieces which had only been hinted at throughout the film. Not so much a heart-rending, ‘blub like a child’ reveal; more a less-than-cathartic, what a pitiful, unenviable existence.

    Read this one! No spolier
If you are reading this rest assured I won’t be giving the plot away unlike other reviews here.I purchased this DVD on the strength of ‘Dragon Tatoo and a liking for Scandanavian Noir. Noomi Rapace is very good in the central role, showing she is an actress of real worth. I think a success of the film is the way it brings horror to a mundane everyday envronment rather than a classic gothic setting. I’d describe this as a horror film though there is very little blood (sorry gore fans…).I did have an inkling of where this was going about 75% of the way through but it didn’t spoil my enjoyment of the film. There is one key bit of dialogue almost at the end which make senses of it all and like me you might want to rewind that sequence again.93 minutes well spent.
