Another Generic Tablet? Not Quite.
This tablet has left me smirking. On the one hand, it has me sighing again — seeing, yet again, the ubiquitous generic tablet branding, marketing, and feel. On the other hand, it proves to be a surprisingly functional tablet at this budget price point (around £150). For casual and light usage, this seems enough; with heavier needs, the specifications and value become questionable.Specifications:=============The tablet from Oscal resembles the mass market of generic tablet and mobile phone offerings, yet uniquely offers some genuine upgraded features not found elsewhere.The tablet comes with a huge 12 inch display, boasting a resolution of 1200 x 2000 – considered 2K screen quality. Impressively, the screen also reaches up to 380 nits of brightness, which, before delving further, I can say outshines my monitor and remains clearly visible outdoors. I also appreciate that this tablet includes actual stereo box speakers on both sides, unlike the weak, one-sided vents on other tablets.Oscal has also not held back with other specs: a huge 9000mAh battery, 256GB of onboard storage (expandable via SD card), and a SIM slot. Powering this large device is a lesser-known budget processor by Unisoc called the Tiger T615. There’s no denying it’s not on par with an Intel chip, but again – the keyword here is budget. Compared to slightly cheaper or similarly priced options, this processor offers better performance for the money, with its Octa-core structure and combined 24GB RAM for multitasking and light gaming. All of this is tied together by Android 15, which gives the tablet a modern, familiar look and feel.Further value is added by the inclusion of a stylus, case, and screen protector. This kind of bundle is common for budget devices from abroad. Honestly, while they don’t justify the purchase alone, they do add a layer of convenience.Setup and Operating System:========================Setup was extremely easy, with the software offering a brilliant, minimalist, highly functional Android stock experience. I feared the worst – endless software agreements and pre-installed bloatware – but I was pleasantly surprised. The tablet keeps things clean. No clunky themes or unremovable apps, just a simple, straightforward Android 15 experience.Everything leans into Google’s ecosystem: wallpapers, widgets, theme colours, Photos, Cloud storage, Contacts, Messages, Maps, Keep Notes, Assistant, and more. It’s all here, and it all works smoothly.Screen Performance:=================The display is extremely impressive for a budget tablet. At first, I was put off by what seemed like a washed-out, grainy screen – but this was largely due to the supplied, ugly wallpaper. With a few tweaks, I was buoyed by the tablet’s phenomenal brightness and surprisingly vibrant colours.That said, the 2K screen does come with some caveats. Due to scaling or aspect ratio limitations, YouTube doesn’t offer 1440p (2K) playback options on 2K videos. The much-advertised HDR feature is only supported at 720p, and more worryingly, the tablet starts to lag and even crash, presumably from a lack of processing power.However, in more realistic use — browsing, viewing high-res photos, and watching YouTube videos at 1080p/60fps, the screen proves its worth. It’s wonderfully bright, with vibrant colours and crisp details. Nature videos and quality wallpapers, in particular, make this device feel like something far more premium.General Performance:==================In day-to-day use, the tablet gets the job done, though not without familiar drawbacks found in many lesser-known or unbranded devices. Despite the Octa-core processor, the user experience is hampered by lag.Compared to the fluid experience of modern smartphones, this tablet feels sluggish. Swiping between menus and switching apps is met with noticeable stuttering. For those used to snappy, high-end devices, this can be frustrating. However, for younger users or those coming from older devices, this may not be a dealbreaker. Apps still open quickly, and once loaded, the tablet generally feels responsive, just not particularly fast.The 16MP camera performs well enough for this price bracket. It captures decent colour and detail and impressively doesn’t lag or freeze. The shutter is quick, though you’ll need a steady hand to avoid slight blur after the shot.Conclusion:==========All in all, this tablet passes the mark as a functional, respectable budget device. Equipped with a stock Android 15 experience, the tablet is almost single-handedly saved from a lower review score by being highly functional and fuss free. The surprisingly large 12-inch 2K display is bright and vivid, making it a joy to watch content on — even if the software and processing power don’t fully unlock its potential. General performance falls short of modern expectations but still offers a usable and mostly responsive experience for casual use.For video watching, reading, note-taking, or light app use, this tablet punches above its weight, especially for the price. It’s not perfect, but it doesn’t need to be. If your expectations are managed and your needs modest, the Oscal tablet might just be one of the better surprises in the budget tech space.
