Telephoto zoom takes you closer to the action

The world’s smallest and lightest* telephoto zoom lens for Sony full-frame E-mount mirrorless cameras
* Among 300mm-capable telephoto zoom lenses for full-frame mirrorless cameras (As of August, 2020: Tamron)
The 70-300mm F/4.5-6.3 Di III RXD (Model A047) for Sony full-frame E-mount mirrorless cameras is a telephoto zoom lens designed and created so photographers of all skill levels can enjoy high quality images comfortably. It achieves the world’s smallest size and lightest weight, coming in at 148mm (5.8 in) long with a maximum diameter of 77mm, and weighing just 545g (19.2 oz).
With special emphasis on resolving power, Tamron has deployed special lens elements appropriately arranged to correct chromatic aberration, generally very strong in a telephoto lens, as well as other aberrations. Users can enjoy high-resolution images combined with the stunning bokeh qualities that are achievable only with a telephoto lens.
The lens also incorporates the RXD (Rapid eXtra-silent stepping Drive) stepping motor unit, a high-speed precision AF drive system that is remarkably quiet.
The 70-300mm F4.5-6.3 is a versatile lens for photographing landscapes, sports and other action, pets and wildlife and more.

High quality images with beautiful, dreamy bokeh
The lens is made up of 15 elements in 10 groups with an appropriate arrangement of LD (Low Dispersion) lens elements. Aberrations such as axial chromatic aberration (which tends to occur in telephoto lens designs) have been well corrected.
The 300mm end, which receives particularly frequent use in a telephoto zoom, provides excellent high-resolution performance from the center of the image all the way to the corners. Stunning bokeh (intentional background blur qualities) are another remarkable feature of this new lens.

Superb AF keeps it sharp and quiet
The AF drive incorporates an RXD (Rapid eXtra-silent stepping Drive) stepping motor unit. RXD uses an actuator that is able to precisely control the rotational angle of the motor, allowing it to drive the focusing lens without passing through a reduction gear.
The addition of a sensor that detects the position of the lens to a high degree of accuracy enables high-speed and precise AF, which allows you to maintain razor-sharp focus when shooting continually moving subjects or filming video. The lens is also remarkably quiet, eliminating concerns of drive sounds being picked up while shooting video.

Built with Mirrorless in Mind
Tamron’s new 70-300mm F4.5-6.3 zoom is compatible with many of the advanced features that are specific to mirrorless cameras. This includes:

  • Fast Hybrid AF- Eye AF
  • Direct Manual Focus (DMF)
  • In-camera lens correction (shading, chromatic aberration, distortion)
  • Camera-based lens unit firmware updates

Additional features:

  • Moisture-Resistant Construction

    I’m impressed – very impressed
For a “cheap” lens (maybe I should say affordable) this gives some great results. The autofocus is decently fast – maybe not up to Sony G Master standards, but I can’t afford one of those in this range so it’s a moot point. The lens itself is compact for the focal range and it’s also not too heavy. Yes, it does feel a bit plasticy, but come on for this price I can put up with that.I’ve posted a few example images I took with it to show the kind of sharpness you might expect. The cricket shots were shot in APS-C mode on my Sony A7iV, so the resolution is lower than normal and ISO was fairly high, but the shots give a good example of the lens output.I’d love to buy one of the super high quality Sony versions, but they’re about what, 7 times the price? For this money the Tamron is a real bargain in my opinion.Bear in mind, when looking at the example cricket shots, that this is not the full resolution of the camera – I used APS-C mode to get an effective focal length range of 105-450mm. If I’d been closer to the action and using the full frame resolution the shots would have been even sharper.I think the lens is also great for portraiture, despite having a fairly small aperture. You can still get pleasing bokeh and shallowish depth of field. The photos of my dogs demonstrate that well, I think. If you look at the photo of my Maltese and check out the sharpness of his eyes and facial hair, coupled with the depth of field fall off, you can see how good this lens would be for portraiture.Hard to go wrong with this lens for the money and remember it’s actually a full frame FE fitting.I did a lot of research before buying this lens and it was a case of getting this – which I can afford – giving me maybe 90-95% of what I want from a lens like this, or saving up for a year and getting the expensive Sony. Honestly, no contest.

Good quality and value for money lens
Good sharpness throughout. Picture quality overall excellent. Not sure why the same lens for Sony is over a hundred pounds cheaper?

    Sharp budget telephoto lens
This is the perfect replacement for the Sony equivalent which would retail for £1100+ so ideal for those on a budget – Sharp enough too at most ranges just relies on in body stabilisation where it’s more expensive counterpart would have its own stabilisation – Using it on a Sony a7c

    Pleased I kept it
I was initially dithering over whether to buy this or the 28-200mm, I have the Tamron 17-38 and 28-70 lenses which are both excellent, but thought I’d try this for the price for a longer reach. I have the Sony 24-240 too but it’s a heavy beast and thought a combination of lenses may work out well. When it arrived, out of habit, I registered it with Tamron straight away , not thinking I might want to return it and after the first day or so that’s what I was thinking of doing…but then…I used it a lot more and was glad I kept it. It’s a really light lens, no IS but not been an issue so far and I’m really impressed with the photos I get from it. I’m an amateur snapper for the last 45 years so as long as the end result looks good to me, or can look a bit better still with a touch of Photoshop, then I’m happy enough, and this lens delivers great results as far as I’m concerned!

Great Telephoto Lens and not too heavy. Affordable too.
I read a few negative reviews about this Tamron Zoom Lens/Sony e mount 70 to 300mm.Took some photos with it today in Hammersmith and I must say, I’m delighted with the image quality and the price I paid for it on Amazon. It’s a great Lens and I’m very pleased with the image results.Minimum Aperture is F4.5, but you’ll pay a hefty price for a Sony Lens that does F2.8.It’s not too heavy to lug around either on my Sony A7 mk3.I’m delighted with my Tamron Lens. Haven’t used it yet for Video but I’ll do that soon.I’m only an amatuer photographer but I’m delighted with the Tamron Lens and the sharpness of the photos even at 300mm full zoom.

    Better than expected.
Was a bit anxious about this lens as it lacks image stabilisation but I have a Sony A7 ii with IBIS so took a chance. Very pleased so far and despite being less steady due to my advancing years I achieved acceptably sharp images. Very good value at about 40% less than the equivalent Sony. Feels and looks well made too.Recommended.

    Grey import – Avoid
Received a grey import (not imported through authorised channels) so 5 year warranty not valid with Tamron. Returned.
