I had an outdoor camera from Eufy monitoring our back garden which worked really well – but it did require me to get the step ladder out from time to time in order to bring it in to charge the battery. This was a nuisance when we were away for a few days coinciding with a flat camera batteryâ¦This solar-powered camera from Baseus looked like a good alternative, cleverly incorporating a panel which tracks the movement of the sun throughout the day to optimise charging. The camera has a solid, premium-looking construction and installation was straightforward.Set-up requires downloading the Baseus app and creating an account, following which the camera was quickly detected and connected to our wifi network. Initially however although the camera/app would send notifications when movement was detected, the recorded âeventsâ were usually 0 seconds long. Live viewing from the camera would often result in a âplayback errorâ message, suggesting a poor network connection; not an issue that Iâd ever experienced with the Eufy camera, and speed checking with my phone next to the camera gave Download 17.5/Upload 13Mbps (which is about standard in our rural location).Baseus customer service response was pretty good (with a small delay due to Chinese New Year) and these issues now seem resolved following a Firmware update, with great picture quality from the camera.Hopefully with the bugs sorted out, this camera should provide maintenance-free monitoring. The camera is not inexpensive listed at a penny under £100, however at time of review thereâs a £30 discount voucher available which is a great deal.

Reliable outdoor surveillance
Monitoring outdoor areas has been effortless with this camera. The image quality is sharp, both day and night, and the wide-angle lens covers a large area. The solar panel works efficiently, keeping the battery charged even in less-than-ideal weather. Alerts are prompt and accurate, providing peace of mind without constant checking. Setup was straightforward, and the robust build handles all kinds of weather.

good detail to the camera, rotating solar panel works (but needs to face south for optimal charging)
PROS-2K resolution is great for the amount of detail it records-quite a wide lens, sees a lot-easy to install, setup is uncomplicated, with prompts throughout-decent amount of onboard storage-can take power from a USB connection (but, in that case, better to buy a camera without a solar panel and save a few ££)-app records when it detects motion-decent IR recording (I prefer not to use the white LEDs, as Iâm in a residential area)-most functionality available without subscription (which is mainly about offline storage)CONS-really only good on south-facing walls, as the panel needs direct sunshine to gather a decent charge-only 8GB of internal storage, and no slot for a memory card (I prefer to put 64GB cards into my cameras, so I can have a good history of recordings)-not inexpensive (though there is a £30 voucher at the time of this review)-there is a lot of torque on the small ball on the bracket, you gotta tighten it down pretty hard to prevent tilting under gravity-all plastic-app could use a little polish-a subscription needed for optimal functionalityNOTES-yet another app to install (and they require registration)
