(Linked to a Samsung telly). The functions are sluggish. Turn on ….and wait! Volume up / down slow to respond. Does it fill the room, ie stereo? No. If you had it at the far end of your desk in line with your ears it would be good. Not impressed BUT I am nevertheless happy with my purchase from a VALUE point of view. Would I ever use it as a desk speaker? No! I love my Audio Engine speakers powered by my PC.

Real HiFi Sound , An Amazing Soundbar.
I wanted a sound bar for my home cinema to replace a cheap one that sounded tinny and as a bit of a HiFi Buff I also was looking for a sound bar that could also replace my vintage but awesome sounding HIFi as I wanted something with Blue Tooth Connectivity. With a limited budget of £200 I hoped this sound bar would fit the bill and I was not disappointed. This sound bar blew me away, no pun intended.
The sound quality is beyond expectations. Its real state of the art full bodied HiFi quality sound. It even excels my old top of the line HIFi system. The sound is just perfect. Plenty of booming bass during action scenes of movies that really shakes the room but also perfect mid range and highs. Voices are crisp and clear, its outstanding and using my Echo show connected via Blue Tooth music is breathtaking. Throbbing punchy bass that is just right without sounding overpowering and exceptional mid and high range. Music from Heavy metal to classical sounds superb, easily as good as a lot of high end dedicated HiFi. It only has 4 sound modes, Movie, Music, Night and Pure but they are just right for the source selected. You can also control the bass levels. DTS Virtual X provides an amazing room filling soundstage that envelopes you with sound and its hard to comprehend such a massive soundstage could come from the bar but actual surround effects that sound like they are coming from behind you are not as good as I hoped but without external rear speakers this is to be expected I guess. My only criticisms for this amazing bar is that maximum power could be higher. In a small to medium sized room I find that It provides adequately loud room filling sound with 4 leds lit out of a maximum of 5 so its loud enough to be so loud you have to shout to be heard but power hungry people or people with very large rooms might like a little more power. This sound bar can also provide perfect undistorted sound even when its at full power. The other criticism I have is the remote which is a bit unresponsive on times and seems to go through a lot of batteries. The Sound bar looks every bit the quality thing it is. All in all this is an amazing bit of kit. Real HiFi sound and sleek looks at a very competative price. the sound really is outstanding and exceptionally good. Perfect for movies and perfect for music. Very impressed indeed.

Very disappointing from Denon
I bought this because it has the Denon label, note I didn’t say “made by Denon”. In the last 30 plus years I have had a few Denon HiFi units, all high quality and worth the money. I should have realised that as with many of the older well respected brands, eventually, the name is sold on and quality suffers. The price for this unit should have been the give away and that’s on me. This brand was always a bit more costly but worth it however, this soundbar was not in the higher end price range for the specs offered and once installed and set up, that’s apparent.
I am well versed in audio equipment and understand the limitations of size particularly relative to low frequencies but this is a lot more tinny in the bass than expected. One can raise the sub level on the remote control but as soon as you get to any reasonable living room level, it starts spitting and distorting. Interestingly, Bose manage to get out some serious bottom end with smaller enclosures and indeed some of the inexpensive portable BT speakers I have in the house make better bass than this. It’s achieved through a combination of drivers and porting and within this enclosure, there is plenty of room.
However, the most annoying aspect is that the unit shuts off randomly. On occasion, removing the mains lead is required to get it started again as the remote control becomes ineffective.
The sound quality is marginally better then the built in TV speakers (LG 55″) and while I could have opted for the soundbar and sub package, the details provided by Denon suggested this wasn’t necessary. I can correlate the difference between the soundbar and built in speakers because I don’t always realise it’s turned itself off, the TV’s speakers being a bit more mid biased in the 800-1.5KHz range, and that’s it. It’s not a disaster but I couldn’t recommend it, that said, many folks reported being happy with this item in the feedback section.
Update Oct 24 – I’ve had this soundbar 6 months and I am very disappointed. As mentioned above, I bought it based on my positive experience in the past with Denon brand audio, but this item just has the label, not the quality. The sound is “marginally” better than the built in TV speakers (LG55″) and it continues to switch itself off randomly. Also, it has taken to muting without any notification, ie: the indicator lights are still on but no sound. The only way to restart it is to disconnect from the mains and then reconnect, using the Denon remote control or the TV remote doesn’t reactivate it. Fortunately I only purchased the soundbar, had I bought the package with the matched sub woofer, then the outlay would have been a lot more money wasted. I have made sure to check that the error is not mine through faulty connection or bad cables (hardwired through the HDMI return port) and am left with the feeling that I will not be purchasing Denon again in the future, and will certainly advise anyone who might ask me of this experience.
There is much better to be had out there I’m sure, but Denon isn’t it, anymore.
