Great compact multifunctional router for traveling, packed with features, highly configurable
I purchased this product as I could not reach certain cloud services due to firewall riles and wanted to create a portable network in a public workspace/WiFi, which expires every 5 days.In repeater mode it takes care of registration on public WiFi where you have to login via a web browser.Enabled Tailscale for network routing via an exit node, this is so I could overcome the firewall rules.Really impressed with how many options you have and the help media was easy to follow. After a few emails back an forth with support, the solution was solved as they we’re was quick to respond. You can reconfigure the WAN port to a LAN port which is handy if you have 3 cabled network devices. I updated the firmware no problem and the device even offered a remote support option when you need some additional support from the manufacture. It’s nice compact and light weight, really happy with this product.

Excellent bit of kit
This is essentially a single board Linux computer running version of OpenWrt, plus GL.iNet’s web interface.I hadn’t heard of GL.iNet until I bought a “travel router” made by them. I was away for a month and the travel router worked perfectly. I was so delighted that, after I got back, I bought this upgraded version to use in my home. The attractive features of this router include that it’s compact, very reliable, has all the settings features you’ll ever need in a router (e.g. home DNS with static IPs and hostname assignment), with Ethernet and WiFi6 (802.11ax) connectivity. And it works perfectly as a bridge to my Zyxel outside LTE(4G) router/antenna that I need to use in my rural location – similar to how the travel router provided a secure bridge to hotel WiFi.The only downside is that WiFi coverage throughout my house has diminished just a tad. Reception in a certain part of my house went from unreliable to none at all. I don’t think the GL.iNet WiFi is weak, more that my old router signal was unusually strong. Since depending on “unusual” is never a great idea I solved the problem by installing a TP.Link powerline range extender to fill in my “not spot”, which works perfectly – home network perfection! Btw TP.Link recently released a version that does WiFi6 (802.11ax): https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0C9F23VYJ?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details.

Great Wireguard Router
I bought this and deployed it in my parents house with it’s wireguard VPN connection configured. Thus, any devices in my parents house that connect to this thing wirelessly or using one of the LAN ports seamlessly accesses my home network securely. Both my parents and I have gigabit internet. I was able to access my files whilst staying there over Christmas with absolutely no hanging or buffering. I had thought the wireguard processing would slow it down, but it handled it like a champ. The user interface is super easy to understand (at least I found it to be, especially compared to things like Netgear’s interfaces). I also found the web UI to be quick and snappy. Again, I’m used to my Nighthawk X6 R8000 which seems to chug along slowly, and need to reboot whenever you make a change, and takes forever to restart.I will probably buy one for myself as a travel router for the next holiday, as being able to provide a VPN’d wifi connection to all the devices without them needing to have anything installed (becaues it’s just an internet connection to them) is really handy. However, I don’t believe it can connect to a wifi source, and provide a wifi access point at the same time, so I may need to get a second alternative device to either act as the wifi AP, or provide a WAN ethernet connection to this thing. Either way fixes that issue.

All singing, all dancing but could do with being on a diet, plus … power picky
I’ve been using GL.iNet products including the Mango, USB MicroRouter and Slate 750S for some years now. The open architecture and ability to add functionality via the underpinning of the Linux O/S is invaluable. Due to a cat related incident, one of my Slate 750S’s bit the dust so I bought the Slate AX as a replacement. Now, I had used the original Slate in a number of environments, it was truly pocket sized, USB as low as 5V 1A could power it and it was a very capable bit of kit, once you added OpenSSH server, TOR, Wireguard etc to it… 8-)The new Slate AX however is, no matter what the title says, NOT pocket sized, unless you have trousers that have a very roomy, bellowed cargo pocket. In addition, unless you have a USB-C charger that is AT LEAST 20W output, forget about using it.20W will get it up and running, 18W …. not powering up. Not a graceful, lower power output, runs a bit slower, it won’t power up at all, so be aware that you can’t run this off a laptop or desktop USB-C port or any adapter without 20W or above output. My biggest bugbear, on security, with the default admin password being “goodlife” across, pretty much all the range has finally been changed to a longer, random alpha string so better than before. The setup is clean and in general intuitive, no issues with connecting to either an ethernet connection or Wi-Fi.The DDR3L 512MB / NAND Flash 128MB means you have a lot of headroom for installing apps to extend its use and the preset, built in support for various VPN’s makes life a lot easier for non tech folks.I see this as a home/home office bit of kit not a throw it in your bag when you are travelling bit of kit.The range of features is good, don’t get me wrong and I am using it to good effect at home ….. but the size and power limitations means I’ll be keeping it firmly in the home and travel with the 750S.

Superb travel VPN router
These are awesome when travelling. Super quick to set up and mean all my devices can use an encrypted link to the internet using my Mullvad VPN geo-locating me wherever I need to be.
