Hugely frustrating
In many ways this thermostat is a solution looking for a problem. Lots of very clever possibilities most of which I didn’t want or need. The problem is that I am now on my third thermostat as they tend to fail after about a year. In my case it is the WiFi failing to reconnect after dropping out for some reason. Apparently this is a common problem with the series 3 and the only solution other than wasting time trying endless and useless help procedures is for Google to replace the thermostat.This is the last chance saloon for the Nest 3 and if and when this thermostat fails I will replace with a Hive or some other alternative.

When I was finally ready to replace my previous scheduling thermostat I looked at a variety of options. Frankly they are all priced similarly. The Nest is fantastic and can also work with a second or multiple other Thermostats in different areas of the house – which I now use a second Thermostat with this Nest Learning Thermostat. I LOVE the Nest App and I can easily control the temperature and furnace/air con elements both in and away from the house. This has to be one of the best features – being able to check on your home when on vacation! You can programmed temps for different parts of the day and you can also schedule the different remote or base Thermostat to drive the temperature at different times of the day too. Easy peasy to install – with app-driven step-by step guidance and/or video and/or booklet diagrams. Be sure to plan to fix up the wall and/or repaint when you remove the old thermostat and before you install this one!!

On going review, I will update as months go buy, need to go through heating as well as cooling, but right now I can only cover setup and cooling.I just bought a house and replaced an old chronotherm thermostat with this piece, so it is a 30 year if not more jump into the future.let me start by saying that the old one was doing a relatively poor job of keeping up with the daily cycle, i.e. pushing too much cold air during the day and not enough at night.Right after upgrading to this thermostat I could feel a difference, but first things first, lets go through the setup and use.Installing this was super easy. I took a picture as recommended of my old system, turn off the furnace / cooler power, and got going.It took me 5 minutes to remove the old thermostat and label the wires, then I had to extend a bit the opening in my drywall as it was not placed correctly originally. 5 minutes later using the provided screwdriver (really nice one, definitely getting to be my kitchen screwdriver, if you are keeping one in your kitchen, this one is an upgrade trust me) I had the base screwed in the wall wit the self taping screws, and the wires connected.Clicking the thermostat itself in place, and entered the network and password stuff through the dial. not ideal, did not check if a WPS option was available, and I would have liked a bluetooth option through the application, but that was not too long.software setup:As soon as I was done entering the wifi info and clicking the various options regarding what kind of setup I had based on the wires it detected, the system went through a test of the fan first, then cooling, and finally heating. Overall 5 / 6 minutes of test to confirm all the wires are working as expected.At that point go and grab a coffee as the system will update it’s firmware and it takes a while.As soon as you are done with the update, you can start playing with the app, if you created and account in the mean time (I already had one)Using the app:The application is relatively simple, a couple menus related to the options you want to activate or not (predictive temperature, recirculating air, etc..)After a couple days, you get a sense of the menus to use, and of what the thermostat is doing.Usage review:after close to a month, I can tell the difference, I activated some options to get more comfort out of it.The daily recap is nice and tells you what happened and why it does what it does.Overall extremely good productedit: after a month I still love it, the comfort option are really a must and I am not sure if it makes my system work that much more.also I initially wanted to have the temperature at 23 but found that 23.5 was better, even after constantly switching to 23.5 the auto schedule insist on remembering 23, so I will have to adjust the schedule, still waiting a bit to see of the auto learning will pick it up at some point

We’ve had the Nest 3rd Gen. for a few months now and couldn’t be happier with it. Installation was a breeze and the setup process only took a few minutes. This thermostat has lots of features and it’s worth taking the time to know the heating/cooling system your home has so you can maximize the use of the Nest Thermostat.In terms of efficiency and cost savings, based off our bills this winter we’re more efficient that our neighbourhood averages.The “Away” mode feature of the thermostat has been a big money saver for us and using your phone to access the thermostat to preheat your house before coming home is great!The construction of the thermostat feels sleek and solid, which you should expect for the price you pay. The packaging itself is very simple yet organized. We did not use the mounting plate for our installation because it does tend to protrude out quite a bit.I would definitely recommend this product, and I’m looking forward tot his summer to se how it handles our A/C needs.
