I like the author’s style
Really insightful and very easy to read. Great story telling from the author that really helps to set the pace and tone, helping the topics sink in without having to go back over old ground, as with a lot of text books.A great section on tools to acquire and tips on how to use them throughout. Really liked the nod to the magic smoke – if you let it escape, you can rest assured the device is not likely to work afterwards.

Very helpfull
Being an amateur electronics hobbyist for several years I am looking for books that can give advanced tips of how to fix “things”. This is an art in itself as it require great knowledge and experience in the field. Also, because “things” today are different from older electronics – there is so much more digital components, SMD-soldered parts and complicated PCBs -it can be difficult to give advice that last without being too general. The book is written by an experienced old hand that know his solder and it really brings a lot of good advice, combined with nice close-up photos. I like that the author explains some cases that was complex to solve – and I would want more of such histories, as they sometimes are better to get the point through. I would have wanted some more tips on repairing or modifying modern electronic music equipment, as this is where I am now (modding older synths). But all in all, the book is recommendable.

Great basic foundations of electronics.
The book does itself a disservice by calling itself a repair book, it tells you all the basics about the usual electronic components and the tools you need. This book is a great first step into learning about electronics in general – not just for repair jobs.

Great book
Excellent product I’m glad I bought it

Great book
Great read if you’re interested in electronics. Starts by going through tools required (with quite a lot of emphasis on oscilloscopes), covers basic schematic usage, block diagrams, then does a section on typical issues in various types of equipment. This book has been updated and now mentions SSD’s and memory based recorders. It doesn’t suggest you try to fix these, but it deals with the analogue side of these circuits (which is typically where the problems occur) and how to trace them. I enjoyed it.

perfect very handy!
i knew the basics of electrics and electronics before i read this book, am halfway through and have learnt a fair bit, mostly common sense but also helpful information on tools, what to buy, and more importantly, how to use the gear, i have most of it lying around anyway, an in depth on oscilloscopes, components, a glossary, humour, fairly easy to understand book, and humorous at times as well.unfortunatley not a very long topic on transformers, i already know how they work, i want to know how to diagnose a dodgy one! anyway i guess its off to youtube again…(said the idiot)

Malmedy, Belgium — the 22 Dec Y2020I like the overhall approach and philosophy that Mr Geir describe by practical experience in this very usefull book as the compexity of electronic systems always grow, it is of first importance to analyse correctly the different fields of systems in an ensemble so to isolate the one that actively contribute to the general failure of the system. He describe the job troubelshooting as a comprre with an Investigator and what ever is the level of complexity of a system that can lie on hardware or software or the different links in beetwen, it is of first importance to develop a kind of instinct that achieve you to isolate the part of the system that get in trouble….I concieve also my systems by parts and when the parts are ready, then put everything together theoreticaly it should work, but practically hidden interaction beetwen part, specialy the ones related to the software and hardware interactions are a kind of hidden game with a lot of surprise on the key to make run the ensemble. That’s why the valuable experience of Mr Geir in the approach of troubelshooting systems is of good advise and help in term of practise all fellow with hands on the track….Tks, i could make me an opinion in the years 90ties, what is Boston like, Great city with very interesting enterpreneur spirit…. HGT…

I am a big fan of information and having stock of different tops when it comes to fixing everything and anything. I enjoyed the content and layout of everything in this and is on my shelf of knowledge for future reading and reference.

Perfect the different sections. Historical explanations like electrolytic capacitor scandal is very interesting. Informations such as how many complex electronics schematics are noted for components like U5000 and then all associated components with same numbers C5001, R5002 and so on are spot on. Can only recommend buying this book even for people which work in the electronics business and went to school/university it still covers many intersting aspects which are particularly useful for electronics repair.
