Excellent. Does the job perfectly well, easy to use. It is SLOW to scan in films, but as this scans frame by frame at about 4 frames a second, this is to be expected. Rewind is a bit of a faff, having to swap reels over and rewind speed is slow. Somewhat fiddly to thread the film through too, but not too difficult once you get the hang of it. Overall, this is a great bit of kit, exceptional value and does the job well. No problems at all with scanning quality. Recommended, and does a better job than most commercial scanning companies that do not scan frame-by-frame.

Kodak Reels works well
The Kodak Reels does work well. Plus points: provides as good a quality scan as you are likely to get; there are useful adjustments for colour, sharpness, exposure, zoom etc.; the controls are well thought out with nice âclickyâ buttons rather than a touch screen. Annoyances: fiddly to get the film in between the âtabsâ – you will need a torch to see what you are doing; scanning is slow; the rewind is slow and you need to swap the reels over to do it.Here are a few point which may be of interest. I found that it was easy to let the film pop out of the white tabs before the cover can be closed. If this happens, the scan seems to be working but it is out of focus. I found out you can’t pop the SD card into a reader on your computer to extract files as the digitizer uses a non standard filing system so Windows thinks the card needs to be formatted. Therefore, you have to use the supplied USB cable. Also I found that my anti-virus (Bit Defender) thought the digitizer was a drive that needed scanning. This caused repeated crashes and I couldn’t download to my PC. Other anti-viruses may behave differently and it might be possible so set Bit Defender up to avoid this problem. In my case, I solved the problem by connecting the digitizer to a Raspberry Pi computer and then transferred the files from that to my PC (over Wi-Fi). One advantage of this is that the Kodak Reels doesn’t have to be lugged over to my PC to transfer files.NB. If you already have a projector and a movie camera, you might want to try using these instead before you splash (a considerable) amount of cash on the digitiser. The quality may not be too different (and it is potentially much quicker as the digitizer only runs at 2 frames per second whereas my projector runs at 18 (I think).

Easy to use and good results
I bought this to digitise my super 8 home movies from the 60s and 70s.. I did a lot of research before choosing the Kodak and also looked at user reviews in the UK and US for several different makes. The Kodak edged it in terms of reviews and had the advantages of a larger screen, larger reel capacity, higher resolution camera and output of 20fps (most are 30 fps) which is closer to the Super 8 speed of 18 fps. (It did have the disadvantage of being more expensive). In my view the Kodak is well made and straightforward to use and I have now successfully transferred over 1000 feet of film. I am pleased with the results given the age of the film and the price point of the Kodak. I did not expect perfection and of course I now have the opportunity to use an editor to improve things like colour balance, stability, etc. I should mention that reviews for all makes commented on the likelihood of film jamming causing problems and therefore it’s risky to leave it unattended. Although my films were in good condition, I decided to babysit the process and the film did stick on 3 occasions but only needed a slight push to get it moving again. I am very pleased with the Kodak and glad I finally took the plunge and preserved the memories on those film.

A little fiddly to set up but does the job
The unit went faulty after a couple of reels had been digitised. The screen wouldn’t illuminate. Quick refund from Amazon though so no problems there. I managed to digitise 2 reels and the quality was acceptable considering the age and condition of the film I used.As many people have found, its fiddly to thread the film over the scanning head but once. to get the knack, it relatively straightforward.

Don’t expect too much
There are quite a few different versions of consumer movie scanners but they all look quite similar and, no doubt perform in much the same way. They have one thing in common… they are quite pricey for what they are, obviously shop around, I found a £100 separated suppliers for the same product.I chose this Kodak Reels version because it has a higher res camera, a decent sized screen and holds large reels. The end product is quite low resolution and is not the same resolution as original film. The output is a compressed jpeg (packed as mpegs). The machine manages to automatically stop in some circumstances but if the film breaks then machine will continue to scan until the end of the reel… depositing film all over the floor.Rewind is quite slow and some online reviewers comment on issues such as a faulty take up mechanism; our machine does not suffer from this. Everything worked well. I found it would not read microSD cards in an adaptor, despite trying several versions but a full sized SD card worked fine. This was not included in the kit.The mechanism for holding the reel in place isn’t particularly positive and a few reels have fallen off. I found the worse part of the process of setting up the scan is clipping the film under the 4 lugs; if they were coloured it would be helpful; otherwise it is easier with white leader film. The scanner is fairly straight forward to use, there are markings to allow the film to be threaded correctly and the menu system is clear and reasonably intuitive.I’m not too worried about colour corrections, I will work on that in software. Brightness levels are fine.

I have 8mm film from the 1930s onwards. Mostly standard 8, some super 8. All different size reels, subjects, b&w, colour, all over the place. The Kodak Reels is very easy to use. Make sure the film is under the film guides or the focus will be off.The digitising process is easy, just load an SD card and press record.I adjusted the sharpening to zero, which gave the best results. It takes ages and you do need to keep an eye on it in case thereâs a rough spot in the film and it jams, that wonât do any damage, but it doesnât auto stop, so you end up with lots of bad bits to edit out.You can adjust the framing if necessary.Rewind process is slightly annoying as you have to swap reels because it only drives in one direction. But if they added another motor, the price would be higher. Despite its annoyances, itâs a decent piece of engineering. I looked at building one, 3d printing etc, but this was so much easier.Result is good, for best quality take it into Davinci Resolve and de noise, sharpen, colour adjust etc.from what I could tell from YouTube videos with samples, the Kodak is the best in class.Expensive in Aus at $1050 when rrp is $399usd so watch for it on special.Mine came from UK so the plug pack didnât have AUS mains plug, but I had several 12v ones that fitted. My finished results looked better than the DvD conversions my Dad paid for.I would recommend this product. Avoid the clones and imitations, Kodak made the film, their digitiser is good.

Oslagbart! 🙂
