Fast and works well with M1 Apple Mac Mini
I’ve been looking for a SSD based storage box to replace my SAN for some time but the cost was just too high so I bought this instead as a stop gap. 10TB is reasonable amount of storage but there are two things which have surprised me.Firstly it works really well with Apple Mac Mini (and therefore probably all Macs) – I don’t get those annoying errors saying the device wasn’t ejected properly – regardless of if I reboot the Mac or use the sleep function, the drive is available and connected when the Mac comes to life, no errors or delays.Secondly the speed ! It’s much faster than any other external hard drive I’ve had. My Mac Mini has a Thunderbolt 3/USB 4 port being an M1 Mac Mini and although this drive doesn’t support USB4 or Thunderbolt connections, it does enable it to run at full 10Gbit/s of USB 3.2 gen 2, which is the same headline speed at 10Gbit Ethernet, which is not really directly comparable, but does mean the the interface is never going to be the limiting factor, the speed limiter will be the disk and Lacie have fitted a fast disk which is giving me well over 220 MBytes/s read and write mixed file sizes. This is impressive for a spinning disk.Given the speed, the price and the build quality which is great (and I can’t hear a fan) this is very good value for money.

    Works great
It is really good itself. Quiet. Does not get warm. Does not vibrate etc. It comes in with all possible plugs I could think of as well which can be easily changed which is AMAZING. The software is simple to understand and so far, worked well.It has 1 semi-con and one real con.Semi-con – It is really heavy for how small it is. Not that you wont be able to lift it but surprisingly heavy.REAL con is the BLUE LIGHT on the front. It is extremely strong and cannot be turned off. You either have to cover it, paint it over or disassemble the device and somehow remove the led. Not only its constantly ON but it also rapidly flashes every now and then and when PC/Laptop is off, it will be off BUT it will still do that occasional flashing for no reason. So far it worked without any problems and the storage is big so that is fine. It mostly just comes to that damn light. It has its own software but you cannot disable the light which is sort of silly. Would be little better if it was not for the BRIGHT BLUE colour of it…

    Good
I bought this to use as a Time Machine/Acronis backup for an Apple M1 iMac. Generally it works well and is fast. I have had problems with a previous LaCie d2 professional that was disconnecting but I have had no problems with this one. Perhaps a firmware update has solved this? Having said that I have found this drive constantly cycles between power up and standby when seemingly not being accessed which is annoying seeing as I need almost silence in order to work. I therefore have resolved this by turning it off and backing up manually as and when needed. I don’t generate many files so regular backups not really needed as I also use iCloud. Additionally I dislike the supplied cable. It is rather stiff, so rather than sitting on the desk and flowing to the drive it bends and twists up and down all over the place and looks messy. Shame because the drive is nice and well thought out.

    Reliable RAID back up solution.
Lacie Two Big Docks are commendably reliable. I have two that outlived their five-year data recovery warranty without issue and are still in use. I got a third one for a good price on an Amazon deal, so I had the data recovery protection again. Lacie were very helpful is reseting the warranty to the date of purchase, so i had the full five-years.This is a traditional two spinning disk RAID, so transfer speeds are acceptable for back-ups and longer term storage but they don’t compete with SSDs on speed. Comms is via Thunderbolt 3. The only RAID option with redundancy is mirrored. The drives remain cool and are reasonably quiet during intense use. The main hardware issue I have found is that external hard drives were not being handled well by early versions of Mac OS Sequioa. This resulted in disks being dismounted or failing to sleep. This has been seemingly been sorted by version 15.5 of the MAC OS. Software wise, Lacie Toolkit software (V 2.300.4) still seems to be pretty buggy on Mac Sequoia. Hopefully there will be an update.Overall, these are a good choice if you want a reliable Thunderbolt external RAID with dock features.

    Serviceable Doorstop or Jewellery Box
As a doorstop for a fairly light door this product from LaCie – now owned by Seagate – is quite serviceable. Remove the electronics and it would make a handy box for small items – cufflinks and the like. For these purpose it would need neither power nor USB-c cables. Attach these and the problems begin. I foolishly chose to use this for data storage. This worked quite well at first but then I stopped downloading data. After a while I had a disk not properly ejected alert. I had not ejected the disk properly or improperly. It kept doing this. I changed cables, turned off and turned on everything I could think of and it kept improperly ejecting itself. Clearly that made me worry that it was not safe with my data. I sent a note asking for help via the LaCie – now owned by Seagate – web site. No answer. I sent another note. No answer. This has been going on for some time and I have now lost the will to keep trying and make my LaCie – now owned by Seagate – work. So, in summary: if you need a doorstop or box for small items this is for you. But do not attempt to use for data storage.PS Also it’s noisy and vibrates quite a bitPPS Why does Amazon insist on at least a one star rating?

This is now the third LaCie 2Big Docks that I’ve owned, so obviously I’m a fan. That said, they can be a bit frustrating. Specifically how often they’ll fall asleep. Truthfully, this could be a Mac OS issue, I’m not entirely sure but I can be editing in Final Cut Pro, switch to my mail app for a second to see if there’s any new mail, and by the time I return to Final Cut, the disc has fallen asleep and I have to wait upwards of a minute or two for it to wake up and allow me to start editing again. It’s incredibly frustrating! I’ve taken to using a third party app to keep it awake by constantly writing a little bit of data to it every 30 seconds, which works, though I worry about the long-term effect it’ll have on the drives. Also, while I usually don’t bother with installing the software that drive manufacturers ship, you absolutely *need* to install LaCie’s poorly named “Toolkit” app so you can not only adjust the LED brightness but more importantly reformat the drive to a Mac OS format in order to optimize speeds. That being said, considering the other options I’ve tried in the past this is among the best. I just wish it was *better*.
