Seriously good – a must have lens for portriats
This is one of those rare lenses that proves to be relatively cheap, but also very very good. I have the Falcon version but it comes in many different brand names including Samyang and Vivitar.First thing to note is that on a Pentax mount it works in aperture priority (Av) mode, so you can set the aperture with the camera dial (you can on my K5 anyway). This is handy as the aperture dial itself is tricky to get to as its very small and recessed. The focus method is manual on these, but it is very smooth and not at all lose, so you are confident the barrel stays where it was put. Additionally I get focus confirmation in the viewfinder with this lens which is useful (the little red dot confirming the subject is in focus). The picture quality is simply stunning, and the bokeh is to die for – many call this lens the bokeh monster. Simply go and flickr to see what I mean. It does take a little getting used to, as at 1.4 the depth of field is tiny, but once you do it’s a joy. All of my best portraits have been taken with this lens. It also gives amazing quality feel to video, as the same narrow depth of field is transferred to the video format. I found I could change the aperture whilst the video was shooting too.Simply amazing value for money, you would spend 3 times for a pentax version, which is marginally better, but no where near 3 x times better. Buy one, you will not regret it!

I got it at a very unbelievable price!Too front heavy for my X-t20… But sharp lens at f2 onwards. Manual focusing can be wobbly due to higher magfications… Not the lens fault… But just a note.

I first heard about this lens while browsing/reading Ken Rockwells site. He thought it was an excellent lens for the price. I was in the market for a 85 F1.4 or F1.8 and looked at both Nikon models. However, since I knew I would only use this lens for shooting portraits at a wedding here or there, and photos of my new grandson, the price tag of the Nikon 85 F1.4 was way to much to justify; and I didn’t like the bokeh of the F1.8. So, I read some of the reviews here on Amazon on the Rokinon 85 F1.4 and ordered it. Immediately after ordering it, I got cold feet as I read through ALL the reviews. Amazingly, by the time I decided to go back and cancel the order, it had shipped! Gotta hand it to these folks. I ordered it on Tuesday, and have it in my hands, today, Friday. Anyway I figured I could always send it back… However, it’s NOT going back! I’m blown away by the bokeh as well as the clarity and sharpness of the 85 F1.4 on my D700, and quite frankly the ease of focusing! I was so taken aback by the sharpness at F1.4 and F2.0 I haven’t even bothered to stop it down further! My biggest fear was focusing with my bad eyesight, coupled with the fact I haven’t used a manual focus lens in over twenty years. This chipped Nikon version btw allows full shutter speed and aperture control. Not only that, but someone mentioned the exif data showed a 50mm, mines shows 85 so it seems that problem has also been resolved. After using it for only a 1/2 hour in the waning afternoon light, out on my deck after opening the lens box, I’m a tad worried about focusing. The focus ring is large, tight, and butter-smooth. Upon coming back into the house, I pulled the lens shade out of the box, and put it on the lens. I find it much more secure than the really crappy one that came with my Nikon 16-35F4VR that I lost in the first hour I used it! This one actually clicks in place. Now the lens cap is a different story. It stinks. I immediately put an old 72mm Nikon lens cap I had laying around on the lens, and I can now place, and remove the lenscap with the hood on.I’d like to point something out here: Reading the reviews on Amazon I found that many of the complaints about focusing are coming from users of the D3100, 5100, and 7000. Plus the gaggle of Canon users. All great cameras, but they are DX formats. This means with the crop factor of 1.5 for the Nikons, it makes this 85mm a tough to focus (IMHO), 128mm lens, especially handheld, or a 136mm on the Canons @ 1.6x crop factor. Couple the manual focus with the crop factor, plus a wide aperture and I can see where some folks may experience focusing problems. On my D700 FX body, 85mm = 85mm. And I have to say the focusing does take getting used to but it seems much easier to do so on a FX camera body. I’m going to try this on my D300 over the weekend and update here when I get a chance. The lens also seems to be well balanced on the D700; if I add the battery pack to the D700, the feel and balance would be even better. Here, I’ve added several images of my dog on the deck, a plant, and a citronella holder with the autumn trees in the background; the bokeh, color, and sharpness are incredible! These were all shot at F1.4. I only had a chance to shoot about 25 images before it got dark, but got about nine or ten pretty decent images. Not too bad considering I haven’t used a manual focus in like 20+ years. I posted the first image I shot after taking my 24-70 F2.8 off and walking out on the deck letting my dog out, quite honestly the first one came out pretty bad, plus a few others as I became more acclimated to the manual focus. Let me know what you think. Most likely my images won’t appear in order so I’ve labeled them SHOT 1, 2, so on so you can see my progression with my first twenty-five shots or so.Updated: 10/22/2011 (The day after above was written). I took the camera with the 85mm F1.4 out back again this morning. Shot another twenty or so images. Still loving it. No faults. I did find myself first focusing myself, just using the huge D700 finder and my crappy, glass wearing eyes, and then, just to confirm I was in the ballpark, using the little green focus confirm dot in the viewfinder and doing some fine-tuning at that point. Haven’t tried live view yet. I may soon.

No autofocus but for the price I paid it’s no big deal. It has an “A” setting for its aperture control.
