It’s become a permanent fixture in my kit bag!
The first thing that surprised me (in a good way!) about the tripod was the weight. It’s a really sturdy piece of kit which helps with the stability. It’s almost entirely metal and finished to a very high degree with a smooth matte black paint job. It feels really nice in the hand and the suggested usage online is that it can double as a handgrip for handheld shooting though I haven’t used it in that way so far. With the legs fully open the top of the head is around 110mm (4″) from the surface on which it is standing. The legs have a good degree of stiffness if you want to set them other than fully opened to gain a little more height and it is still very stable at taller heights (my photos show it at around 175mm (7″)).The tripod head has two locks – one releases the head on a ball mount to allow for universal movement. Cleverly, the other releases the head to rotate on the pan access only for level panning. It’s a nice touch and well executed as panning with a ball head alone is notoriously difficult. The pan action is very smooth and almost feels fluid damped. One thing to note is that the tripod doesn’t have a pan arm, so you need to hold your camera to turn it. For the most stability, holding your other hand on one or more of the legs helped. The tripod head can be removed so you can attach your camera directly to the legs. The details for the tripod claim that “the legs support up to 44 pounds (19.95kg) and the ball head bears up to 4.4 pounds (1.99kg)”. The tripod comfortably held and balanced with my DSLR with a Canon 17-55 f2.8 zoom (which is a big lens!). The tripod is great for mounting mobile phones but you will need a means of adding a tripod bush to your phone in most cases. I used the SmallRig phone cage which worked very well.Just to see what happened I tried my Blackmagic Pocket 4K Cinema Camera (which is permanently in a cage with handle) and it was surprisingly stable, again with the heavy Canon 17-55 f2.8. With such a heavy load (which probably exceeded the suggested max weight for the head!) I would suggest making sure that the lens is over one of the tripod legs to assist with stability if you have the tripod other than at its lowest height. One thing I soon realised while swapping between my various cameras and devices was just how useful the removable Arca Swiss compatible quick release plate is. Another nice touch on a budget tripod.I am a filmmaker so my primary use is for video shooting, but I am sure this tripod it would be equally useful for photographers. I can also see myself using it to mount a Zoom audio recorder or a microphone. It could also be used as an impromptu light stand in a small or awkward location for one of my battery powered lights with a 1/4”-20 screw such as the Rotolight RL48s. I can see this nifty little tripod becoming my go-to device for tricky mounting situations. All in all the SmallRig tripod has exceeded my expectations from the moment I opened the box and it continues to do so the more I use it. It’s a really versatile device and will be a permanent fixture in my kit bag going forwards.

    Initial impressions
I’ve just taken delivery of this tripod. I bought it to replace a Manfrotto Pixi Pro that I’ve lost somewhere (or it’s been nicked whilst I’d put it down at a wedding a few months ago).My first impressions are as follows:-1. Amazing build quality. This tripod is an over engineered, very robust looking and feeling item. It is the perfect weight, machined from some kind of alloy, with reassuringly stiff resistance to the legs (so it feels like it wouldn’t collapse under the weight of say a large DSLR and kit lens or wide angle prime).2. High quality feel on the moving parts. The swivel/panning mechanism feels very well dampened. Very smooth, no grittiness at all. The panning action can be adjusted regarding the resistance by a twist bolt on the size. That bolt is of a size that is easily adjusted even with gloved hands. Or you can lock it out by nipping it up to full tightness. The legs splay all the way out to almost flat to get the camera really low to the ground if required. The resistance is stiff and adjustable with an included Allen key. It’s reassuring at it’s supplied setting and I placed a 7.5kg kettle bell on top of it with the ball head attached and it didn’t budge. Obviously that’s a centered directly downward force. If you had a large heavy lens like a long zoom mounted to the camera it would pull to one side, simply due to physics and the leverage applied by such a large heavy lens (and it’s rated to 2kg max for the ball head joint). The silicon rubber feet do a great job of gripping on a shiny table surface that I tried it on with the aforementioned kettle bell sat on it.3. It’s got a spirit level in the arca plate adjustment bolt. This is going to be useful when you flip the ball head into portrait position but no use if in landscape mode. But this is no Biggie to me as I have an electronic level built into my camera if I need it.The ball head joint has a standard tripod thread and so I could use this with other standard tripods if I want.My initial impressions are that this is a super high quality item that far exceeds that of the Manfrotto Pixi Pro with additional functionality and a more useful and more ‘pro’ style ball joint head for only a little extra money. I have several small rig items and I’ve been using those and Manfrotto for over ten years now. I’m always impressed with their quality. At the £34 I paid for this item I don’t think there is anything at this level of quality and price point to beat it. I’ll update this review as I use it over the coming weeks and months. My main use will be for hand held vlogging, which is feels the perfect size and ergonomics for in my large hands. Some landscape shots when I’m out hiking each week (where I’ll use a Fujifilm XT2 and XF18-55mm lens, which are a moderately heavy combo) and probably my Vanguard 8x32mm monocular for wildlife and mobile phone digi scoping, where I use my mobile phone for identifying birds when I’m out in the great outdoors.I’m looking forward to putting it through it’s paces in all conditions and some hard use. Watch this space.

    High-Quality, Compact Gem!
I recently purchased the SMALLRIG Mini Tripod Tabletop Tripod, and I couldn’t be more delighted with its performance and build quality. This tabletop tripod exceeded my expectations in every way. The quality of materials used in its construction is genuinely high-end, and it shows in every detail. The sturdy aluminium frame gives it a premium feel, and I can tell it’s built to last. It offers excellent stability, even for my DSLR camera, and I’ve used it with a variety of other devices like smartphones and action cameras without any issues. The compact design is a real plus. It’s easy to carry around, and the adjustable height settings make it versatile for different shooting situations. Whether you’re shooting in a tight space or just need a reliable support for your camera or accessories, this tripod delivers. What I love most about this tripod is its versatility. The 360-degree ball head allows for smooth panning and tilting, making it a valuable tool for capturing creative shots. It also comes with a cold shoe mount, which is a fantastic addition for attaching accessories like microphones or LED lights. The rubberized feet provide a firm grip on various surfaces, and it never wobbles, ensuring that my shots are stable and sharp. The overall design is well thought out, making it a joy to use.In conclusion, the SMALLRIG Mini Tripod Tabletop Tripod is a high-quality, compact gem that has quickly become an essential part of my photography and videography gear. If you’re looking for a reliable, well-built tabletop tripod that’s both versatile and durable, I highly recommend this product. It’s a fantastic addition to any photographer or videographer’s toolkit!
