Absolutely stunning book. Was so impressed I bought a second copy for a friend’s 60th Birthday who loved the series when it originally aired on BBC 1

Absolutely fantastic book its a must for any fan !Brilliant illustrations and artwork film locations costume design and never before seen pictures and behind the scenes it certainly wasn’t all for nothing.

Bound upside down
My husband thinks this is a beautiful book but is anyone else’s book bound upside down? Just very weird. Not sure whether to send it back or not?

Forty years ago, some time after Blake’s 7 came to an end but before Red Dwarf first aired, The Tripods arrived on BBC One. The Tripods were essentially the vehicles of alien invaders who had conquered the human population of Earth many years before. They each took the form of small metallic vessels who stalked the planet on three long, gigantic legs. Running for two series across 1984 and 1985, the subsequent drama focused on four young humans who lived in this strange late 21st century world and their efforts to avoid being ‘Capped’ (a process which saw them brought under mind control by their alien masters) and ultimately leading a rebellion against Tripod rule.The Tripods (which was based on a trilogy of novels written by John Christopher in the late Sixties), developed a cult following but was cruelly cancelled before the third and final series was produced which would have brought the story to its natural satisfying conclusion.Now, four decades on, New Zealand author, Chris Jones has produced an incredibly thorough dissection of the background, history and production of the series resulting in this beautifully illustrated, large 300 page coffee table book. This volume contains more information than even the most dedicated Tripods fan could ever have wanted. There is biographical information on Sam Youd (the real name of author, John Christopher), copies of the scripts for actual episodes and planned scenarios for the planned third series which was never made. There are pictures and features focusing on key scenes, reproductions of sketches and set designs and extensive interviews with the cast and crew. There are chapters focusing on key locations such as Saltwood Castle and Plasglasgwm Farm and detailed graphs charting how many viewers The Tripods got against its Saturday evening rivals at the time (such as Blockbusters and Brookside) or when compared to similar-ish mid-Eighties British sci-fi and fantasy shows (such as Box of Delights and Doctor Who).In short, Chris Jones explores every possible avenue of enquiry anyone could possibly have about the series. It really is a tremendous achievement, not only the definitive guide to this particular show but the perfect template for any book about any TV programme which is produced in the future.
