Tips
Application scenarios
How to use the soil moisture sensor ?
Insert the sensor into the soil, aligning the marking line with the soil surface for accurate measurement. Create automation or manually water the plant when soil moisture drops below a set value, based on your plant and soil conditions.
When the Third Reality Smart Soil Moisture Sensor paired with Hubitat, but can’t see temperature and humidity states?
Please change the device type to “Third Reality Soil Moisture Sensor” in Hubitat, then it should work properly. Note: Update the Hubitat system to latest version.
Does it compatible with Alexa Echo devices?
No, it can not compatible with Echo devices. Alexa does not support humidity, so it is not recommended to use.
Why is the soil moisture and temperature sensor occasionally offline?
If your soil sensor is located far from the hub, it may go offline. Consider adding some Zigbee repeater to enhance the Zigbee range, like Zigbee smart plugs, Zigbee smart bulbs, etc.
Why are the data from the Soil Temperature and Humidity Sensor different from regular temperature and humidity meter?
This is because the measurement methods are different. The Soil Temperature and Humidity Sensor only detects soil surface temperatures for reference purposes only.
Zigbee Hub Required: Compatible with standard Zigbee 3.0, including Home Assistant (ZHA & Z2M) and SmartThings Aeotec. A Zigbee Hub is needed for optimal performance. NOTE: Not compatible with Alexa Echo Devices.
Remote Monitoring and Automation: Receive real-time alerts on your smartphone, allowing you to take action anytime, anywhere, ensuring your plants get the right care. Integrated with smart home systems, these sensors enable automated watering schedules, so you can manage and control your garden’s irrigation remotely, saving both time and effort.
Reliable and Accurate: Equipped with a sensing probe for instant and accurate moisture readings, this meter is suitable for most environments, ensuring your plants receive the right amount of water. Consider Zigbee’s signal range, better for indoor using.
Capacitive Monitoring: Unlike traditional probes, capacitive sensors are less affected by soil salinity and pH, offering greater durability and a longer lifespan in various soil types. Suitable for various gardening places including farms, greenhouses, nurseries, gardens, and potted plants.
More Smart Assistant Supported: With the Smart Bridge MZ1 (sold separately), integrate with Apple Home and Google Home to monitor plants and create automation routines via an app. Additionally, it supports software OTA (Over-The-Air) updates, allowing for effortless firmware upgrades.

Compatible with Zigbee2MQTT
Works well with Home Assistant via Zigbee2MQTT. Note the moisture sensor is shown as humidity by default. Quickly resolved by renaming the entity in Home Assistant.Seems pretty robust, will see how it weathers through the winter.

Leave a lot to be desired but is probably one of the better soil sensors on the market
I have been looking for an internet connected moisture level sensor for a long time and the choice is very limited. The Thirdreality soil sensor leaves a lot to be desired, for one placing the temperature sensor in the plastic body is just a waste of space, as it is enclosed in the battery compartment, which heats up well in excess of the ambient temperature, it would have much more useful if it read the soil temperature. Some have commented as to the size of the battery holder, however unless you have very small plant pots I think it is fine, the fact that the unit takes an AA battery that lasts a couple of years is a neat solution.I first tried using the Thirdreality smart bridge but I could not get it to work properly either with Apple or Amazon Alexa, I then tried the Smart Hub Gen 2 and that was better, although the app can be improved, as it does not for example show the history, and the icons show the temperature in Fahrenheit and have to open each to read the centigrade readingThe instructions suggested to use a screwdriver to pierce the hole in the soil before inserting the sensor, I found using a knife is a better solution as the whole is tight enough to allow direct contact with the soil, whereas if you are to use a screwdriver, the hole is far too big and it will take time until the soil settles and you start to get a steady reading.I have bought 4 of the sensors which i place at varying locations in the garden, they are all reading a moisture level of around 60% which is what I expected considering that it has been raining recently.I wish there was a better product on the market, one that was linked to a database of plants, recoded the moisture level history, had alarms that could be set when a certain a level was reached, and a soil temperature sensor.

Easy Peasy
Setup was straightforward and readings seem accurate. Probe may be too long for smaller pots

Unreliable data and integration problems
Disappointing on the whole. The integration with the Thirdreality Smart Bridge to Google Home Hub in my experience either doesn’t work or isn’t reliable. I’ve spoken to Thirdreality, but as far as I am aware there isn’t a resolution at this time.In addition, I’m unsure about how accurate the readings given by the probes are. I’m testing by using a manual probe (which I know to be accurate) alongside a Thirdreality wi-fi probe. The Thirdreality probe returns higher moisture levels, for example, showing between 50% to 60% when the manual probe gives an almost dry reading.

I’m not rewriting my full review again
IT PAIRS WITH H@BIT&T ELEVATION WITHOUT ISSUES, 2 year battery life. Driver available in the HUB

Paired well with HomeAssitant over Zigbee2MQTT
Paired well with HomeAssitant over Zigbee2MQTTTho I’m pretty confident the Temp measurement is taken from the body and not the probe..Very responsive to changing values

Constantly disconnects, despite being in close proximity to a repeater and other wired devices
Fairly useless, unfortunately. It’s located in the garden, roughly 9ft away from a Zigbee repeater dongle, it connects for a few hours, then drops off again, I was having to pair it again daily, before I eventually gave up on it entirely. I will look for a better alternative.

Works okay so far
Works well with Homeassistant/ZHA. Isn’t too intrusive looking. Battery life yet to be determined but has held up well so far. Temperature is, as it seems, measured in the green top part, which seems to be affected when in direct sunlight.

Originally I was going to write a negative review and announce my return ambitions for this item. Instead, I came back to order more. What changed my mind were a couple of over-the-air firmware updates. They changed the item from an ornament that would only show 0% moisture in any kind of soil – and 69% in a glass of water. After the updates however, I get great coverage and almost instant data upon temperature changes or watering my plants. So whoever is having trouble with these, please make sure the most recent updates are installed before you return.

Great to detect soil moisture. Just unscrew the top, put it in pairing mode and you are off to the races. It is a bit on the big side. Not sure how to test its accuracy, but does tell me when soil is dry. Will pull these out of my pots and put the in the garden in the spring as they seem totally water proof. Little on the expensive side, but it looks like a good quality product. Just fyi, this is zigbee not standard wifi.

While I don’t have any way to verify the results they seem quite accurate. I can clearly see the soil humidity change as I water my plants and it slowly changes throughout the day. They were very easy to setup and just worked out of the box with Home Assistant ZHA.I would say these are really worth it for the price. As an all in one low powered solution. It would be difficult to custom build something with parts for the same price.
