My TOPDON Story – Richie Bates
When I grew up, I bought an old car for £40. After some tinkering, the car was given a new lease on life and successfully hit the road again. While repairing it, I also picked up many car repair tips and skills along the way. As an experienced driver, I have a 26-year record with zero traffic accidents.
Rejected but Undeterred
Every time I see a sports car zoom by, I dream of driving on a racetrack. But when I contacted tracks for a chance, I was rejected. I also went to many repair shops seeking work, but was always turned away for safety reasons. With no choice, I started working for myself. Though an amateur, I enjoy it—I love helping others.

Fantastic device, unbelievable price for what you can do with it.
Don’t normally write reviews on Amazon however, this device is fantastic. I read the reviews for this and other devices both on Amazon and other retailers. They were overwhelming positive for this compared to others in the same price bracket and higher.So I took the plunge and I am not disappointed, full deep level diagnosis of thousands of vehicles. Easy to set up, easy to use and identified the issue I had and others I didn’t even know about. Cleared history, helped me fix an issue I assumed related to something else and ive saved a huge amount of money with simple fixes avoiding garage fees.Can’t recommend this enough amd for the price you cant go wrong. Fantastic would give more the 5 genuinely wouldn’t be with out it.

Very good for DIY users
Great diagnostic tool for DIY purposes. Allows detailed scanning and live data of all sensors on modern cars. Only downside is being and Android based device there are frequent updates to both Android and each brands diagnostic packs. If you donât regularly use the device these updates may be mandatory and can take a long tim, being inconvenient when you need to diagnose an issue quickly.

Cool Little Unit
As an auto electrician and working with hundreds of vehicles a week, you often find that some vehicles donât like certain products youâre installing or coke to you with problems in the first place, so OBD readers are kind of a necessity, when I first received this, straight out of the box you could tell a lot of thought had gone into the design, even with the unboxing of the unit itself. After charging it and setting it up ready to use, I tested it out on my car, The auto vin detection is seem less and makes life so much easier than having to search through lights of brands and models of vehicles, although there is that option I never needed to use it.Iâve had the unit now for about 2 weeks and have been able to use it on lots of different vehicles, the code clearing process as well as diagnostic information are very easy to use and work out. Being able to email the diagnostic information is a life saver too, youâre instantly presented with a health report of the vehicle as soon as youâve plugged in, which once that is done you can then go on to clear codes, get more information, check battery health and find out lots of different information about certain aspects of the car.Overall the Topdon AD500 is a very very good unit, with easy to use functions, a nice design and great price, you get a lot of technology for your money with this unit, there are somethings that this canât do like reset service lights etc but for me that wasnât an issue. This covered every base I needed it too and Iâm sure it will continue to do so for a long while!

Great bit of kit. Everything a basic mechanic or DIYer needs
Easy to use, comes in a nice little tidy case which fits well in a glove box. Detects most codes although currently unable to pinpoint a engine failure hazard on my vivaro. Quick set up time too.

Excellent little machine
Good quality little diag only used it with ford so far but it pinpointed the issue immediately even after garage system couldn’t.. lots of updates on first start but very easy use. Bright clear screen. Love to fact it scans the vin and pulls everything off that / make/model/year/engine size etc .I would recommend

The first warning sign came when I turned on this supposedly diagnostic tool for car machanics, and it wanted internet access!Well, I thought it might need internet access in order to update it’s built-in information, so I entered the name of my Wifi, allong with the coresponding password. Next, it wanted my email address, so that I could create an account with the manufacturer: the email address is needed for them to send you an email with a four digit code that you have to enter during the registration process.Once I had created this account that I feel I don’t need, using the instrument seems reasonably easy, and the instrument seems surprisingly competent. Time will tell, I have only tried it once without any error codes to read. However, the instrument complained that it didn’t have internet access while in my car. It worked as I guess it should, but I don’t like that it seems to want constant internet access.Further, I think the start-up time is too long: 35 seconds (yes, I measured!) from when you press the power switch till the instrument is ready to go. For me, who only does maintenance on my own cars, this is slow. But if I were a professional it would likely be unacceptably slow. During this time, the text “Tablet is starting” pops up on the screen, making me guess that a large part of the hardware and/or software has been minimally adapted from other uses.All in all, so far, I can’t say whether or not I really like the instrument. I really don’t like that I have to set up an account with the manufacturer. Paaarticularly since the process of setting up the account (and thus making the instrument usefull for _anything_!) includes approving two very long legal documents that can only be seen on the screen of the instrument, not on a computer (or printed on paper).
