Customers say

Customers find the security camera well-made, easy to set up, and good value for money, with excellent night vision that works better with outside lighting. The picture quality is good for the price, and they appreciate its functionality. However, the motion detection feature receives mixed feedback – while some find it very good, others report it doesn’t detect motion at all. Moreover, connectivity issues are significant, with customers reporting that the camera refuses to connect and the WiFi connection is problematic.

A compact well made unit. Sharp lens and clear video all controlled by a stable full featured app. Recommended.
I read a lot of reviews and specs of similar wireless cameras before plumping for this model. There are many uses for these cameras; baby monitor, pet monitor or security when you are out. Or just keeping an eye on the kids or pet in the garden (through a window) as you get on with other things. Please note this camera is for indoor use only.I bought it for the security aspect. The item comes neatly boxed with a 2 metre Micro USB cable, usb 3 pin plug, a base tray and screws for fitting to a wall or ceiling and a basic set of instructions in a range of languages. The camera itself has a pleasant ‘head and shoulders’ appearance providing a solid base for the camera unit ball head on top. The unit base is Matt black (on my model) and the ball camera head is finished in high gloss piano black. At the rear of the base is a micro USB slot for mains connection and a micro SD slot for video recording. You can also save video to the Yi Cloud for an annual fee of around 32 euro with a one month free trial before you decide. The camera is controlled via an App available for both Apple and Android and this needs to be downloaded first. A QR code is supplied in the instructions for easy download. I recommend using it as simply searching the App Store or Google play brings up a number of app options. The AppSetting up the camera is straightforward on both Apple and Android devices. The app is the same for both tablet and phone.Plug in and switch on the camera and the ball head revolves on a vertical axis to display the camera lens. This is a nice touch. Turning off the unit causes the ball head to revolve and protect the lens when off. Once turned on for the first time the app guides you through connecting to your WiFi. This is easier done on an Android device than iPad, but not the fault of the app. Once a connection is established a constant readout on signal strength appears in the app. I found no dropped signal in use.The downside of the app is that it provides instructions on use as you go and these aren’t intuitive. The best way to get used to it is to plunge in and ‘play’ until you get it set the way you want it.The settings menu is comprehensive and easily navigated allowing you to name the camera according to preset locations (kitchen, living room etc). There is a small blue light at the front of the unit to let you know it’s on. This can be turned off.The camera can be set to a fixed location or it can be used to track motion which it does extremely well. There is an IR light for night recording which gives a bright black and white image. The camera only records motion and stores these as alerts. An audible message is also sent to your phone/tablet. The alerts are accessed by a dedicated button on the app and appear as a picture with a time stamp. Tapping the picture gives a 6 second replay with the option to play the entire alert sequence. Alerts can be easily deleted. Alerts can also be viewed as a timeline, but this is difficult to use and not necessary. There is a two way microphone should you wish to speak remotely, or it can be set to receive only. The microphone is extremely sensitive and unless used as a baby monitor it is best left ‘off’. Passing cars produce an eerie Darth Vader breathing sound. You can also set the sensitivity of motion sensing between high, medium and low. When I used the camera to monitor garden/patio activity set to’high’ the camera alerted me to birds flying past. I set it to low so that it alerts to major movement only. The camera in useThis camera would be ideal attached to a wall or ceiling however it needs mains access to work, so unless you have some means of cabling it’s unlikely that it will be used in this way. The cable is a generous length, but you are nevertheless constrained as to where it can be set up.The 1080p lens provides a crisp, clear image and is impressive in daylight or at night and using IR. There is some lens distortion and while this can be corrected to some degree in the app you will struggle to get a rectangular image. A minor point which you stop noticing very quickly.I use the camera indoors on a window sill facing out unto a garden and patio area as a form of early intruder detection. The profile of the camera means it blends in with any other windowsill ornaments. There is no distortion or haze operating through double glazing, however the IR light if turned on causes a strong reflection up close to glass and can’t be used in my setup. If you have outside security lights on a pir this will provide all the light you need to capture useable video. The image can be displayed on you device full screen allowing you a remote real-time monitor.I’m very pleased with this unit. It is well made and with a thoughtful pleasing design. The lens is very good indeed. It provides an extra layer of security/ confidence if you are away from home or out of sight of children. Both the app and firmware upgrade so the unit should stay up to date for some time. Video storage can be on a micro sd card and would be suitable for most domestic use, but the option of cloud storage is a nice touch.Highly recommended

Overall this is a good camera…..
I’ve had the 1080p version of this camera for a couple of weeks now so thought it was time to give a review. I’ve not used the intercom, baby crying alerts or the cloud storage so can’t comment on those functions. I have installed a 64Gb card, which works absolutely fine. I have the camera set up on the inside of a first floor window looking down/out over my driveway. First things first, this arrangement will render the infrared night vision useless as the IR LEDs reflect off the glass and create glare on the video/images. I’ve disabled this as the area outside my house is well lit from streetlights. The camera does enter a night mode of sorts as the live feedback turns black and white which is sufficient to see movement etc. One thing to add is that the IR night vision works well in areas that are completely dark. If you’ve got a light source creeping in from somewhere it will affect it. I’ve also disabled the LED lights on the front so that these aren’t reflected back. The only issue I encountered with my particular setup is that despite the cameras having 115 degrees of vertical rotation, there is limited down movement so I have had to angle the entire camera downwards so that it points in the correct direction. This looks a little strange sat on top of a box but works fine. The slight issue here is that as the camera pans left and right it does so in an upwardly curved manner but that is just because of my set up and not in any way a fault. The majority of the vertical rotation is upwards and I suspect this may be to allow more vertical range when mounting the camera to a ceiling rather than sat on the edge of a worktop. I will eventually try to mount the camera upside down somehow to achieve better viewing angles but comparing this to another cheap IP camera I once had the lower vertical range was considerably better on the other model.Aesthetically the camera is very nice to look at and is in no way obtrusive given its diminutive size. The motors controlling motion tracking are reasonably quiet, certainly not loud enough to disturb sleep if placed in a bedroom. When switched off via the app, the lens of the camera moves upwards into the housing to ensure privacy. It’s a nice feature but not exactly a deal winner. With regards to the app, it is almost excellent. Having found a competitors app beyond awful and read numerous bad reviews of other camera apps it’s surprisingly good and very easy to use. The only thing that would have made it excellent would have been the facility to download ‘entire clips’ instead of the just the 10 second ‘alert clip’. Yi Tech Support told me the best way to get entire clips was to remove the SD card and download on another device, not exactly the most helpful response and not particularly practical if the camera is mounted on the ceiling, but when the app allows you to download an alert clips it seems strange why it’s not possible to save an entire clip via the app. It sounds like an afterthought to me or perhaps a deliberate intention to get customers to subscribe to the cloud….Now the features;Motion detection is responsive but as others have commented it is incredibly sensitive even on the lowest setting. I’ve disabled audible notifications on my phone because I was receiving alerts to everything from individual raindrops rolling down the window to a small bird flying past. I think it also started recording a tree blowing in the wind some 20m away. It’s still worth having the motion detection enabled as the moment something dodgy happens it’s worth knowing about it when it happens and not when you eventually find time to look through the alerts. The motion tracking is a nice feature but at night it activates slowly and turns towards something that might have already passed or car headlights in the distance. That being said it’s nice to have as if motion happens outside of one of your preset bookmarks at least the camera will move towards the motion, such as watching a delivery driver. Not many similarly priced cameras have this so it is a worthwhile addition. I’ve tried the cruise function but as others have commented it’s pretty much useless as it slowly rotates through its entire horizontal range which in my case would mean ‘watching’ my walls (and ceiling due to being set up on an angle) and then the inside of the house rather than just what I want it to observe outside. An app update that would allow an option to cruise through the customer set bookmarks would be a great addition to utilise this function better. With regards to the advertised ‘Crystal Clear HD’ images I’m afraid I’m not as satisfied as other reviewers. The quality is sufficient but Yi’s claims you can zoom in 4 times and see even the smallest details in my opinion is a slight exaggeration. If I had the 720p model then I would say the image quality is good but having paid the extra money for the 1080p version I personally think it should be better. I have shared numerous emails with Yi Technical Support regarding this and even sent them an image to review (at their request) but their continued response is that the image details confirm it’s a 1080p image and that the quality in their opinion, ‘looks OK’. Typical sales pitch? During this interaction I requested a 720p version be sent to me to compare the image quality to simply be told they no longer manufacture the 720p version. I find this difficult to believe as they’re still selling it both independently and via online sellers. I suspect it was just an excuse to close the discussion. Again, as others have commented, the Yi Technical Support responses are short and not particularly proactive. In conclusion if I was asked if I would recommend this camera I would say yes because despite my issues with image quality and a few functionality issues with the app (being able to download an entire clip and cruising through bookmarks) it is a good camera. The app alone is good enough to sway the decision against another manufacturer and the average person buying this to keep an eye on things would be more than happy with it. My only advice would be it might be worth saving your money and buying the 720p version instead of the 1080p version but other than that it’s definitely worth buying.

    Terrible app
Was good initially, now you get bombed with ads making it practically useless specially when you want to quickly review a notification. Another issue is that you cannot view the footage on 3 network for some reason. Much better cameras available on the market. 20/5/25.

    Adverts are extremely annoying.
I purchased this camera in January 2023 along with two others, one for outside. They have been working fine. Good pictures and have been recording on a memory card fine. However, full screen adverts have started appearing when you access the app and they are continually trying to get me to pay to use the cloud storage. I managed to send them an email saying I don’t want to use the cloud. They replied offering me a deal on the cloud. Not exactly the reply I was looking for. If you can put up with this they are very good cameras. I’m giving three out of five because of the annoying advertising.

I like it and purchased 5 times. Nice video, nice audio function although my voice comes out too low to be heard if there’s a tv running and sometimes my kids are not aware that I call them. but voice is heared if silent room.It has nice feature of motion and voice detection. What I don’t like is when I display all the cameras , it won’t show all the places together because the camera moves in response to any voice or motion and may end up looking at non view ( wall) so I have to open cam by cam and move it to see.The plug is sometimes not compatible with the UAE electricity socket.I mounted the electricity socket high up so no one unplug it .I didn’t join icloud or add memory card but I like the live view and video notifications.
