DrayTek Vigor 2862AC Quad-WAN Dual-Band ADSL2+/VDSL2 WiFi 5 Router
ADSL/VDSL Business Class Router/Firewall with 5 Port Gigabit Switch
The Vigor 2862 is a router/firewall, supporting both ADSL or VDSL (BT Infinity /FTTC) and packed with professional level features to increase security, flexibility and functionality, making it ideal as your standard router for almost any scenario.
Multi-WAN: ADSL/VDSL | Ethernet | USB (3G/4G) Load-Balancing & Failover IPv6 & IPv4 Dual-stack VPN Trunk/Backup. SSL VPN (16 Tunnels) 802.11ac Wireless VLAN & Multi-subnets Wireless Guest Portal/Hotspot. WAN over Wireless Feature-packed router for ultra-resilient service

Internet Connection via Wireless
Most commonly, your router will connect to the Internet via fixed line (ADSL, VDSL, cable) or cellular (3G/4G/LTE) but the wireless models for the Vigor 2862 series can use a Wireless connection as its WAN (Internet) feed, using it either as a primary or backup Internet connection.
For instance, the Vigor 2862 can connect to your mobile phones wireless hotspot facility and use that as an Internet connection, or load balancing it with wired connections.
Wireless Hotspot
If your home or workplace wants an isolated network for guests or to separate departments, this can be achieved with separate IP subnets, but on wireless you can also use distinct SSIDs. For a full guest network, you can use DrayTek’s new Wireless Hotspot feature.

Wireless Router-Assisted Client Mobility
A wireless network covering a large area is usually made up of several Wireless Access Points (APs), to provide coverage between rooms and avoid wireless dead spots.
A wireless client, such as a Laptop, Phone or Tablet, when moving around such a building, is typically expected to make the decision of when to uncouple from one wireless access point and re-connect to a closer one. In some cases, a client will try to stay connected to an AP even when that client has moved outside of the AP’s optimal range, which can result in longer wait times for videos to buffer and pages to load.
The Vigor 2862 series routers with wireless capability can work in conjunction with VigorAP access points to manage the connection quality of wireless devices, to ensure that the wireless clients maintain a stronger and quicker wireless link when moving around.

Robust & Comprehensive Firewall Web Content Filtering
The firewall protects against attacks including DoS (Denial of Service) attacks, IP-based attacks and access by unauthorised remote systems.
Wireless, Ethernet and VPN are also protected by various protection systems.
The DrayTek object-based firewall allows even more setup flexibility than ever, enabling you to create combinations of users, rules and restrictions to suit multi-departmental organisations. The 2862 also allows selective direction firewall rules of LAN to WAN, WAN to LAN or LAN to VPN.
Web Content Filtering
The content control features allow you to set restrictions on web site access, blocking download of certain file or data types, blocking specific web sites with whitelists or blacklists, blocking IM/P2P applications or other potentially harmful or wasteful content. Restrictions can be per user, per PC or universal and according to time schedules.
Content filtering can also block sites using HTTPS/SSL where URLs are encrypted (and normal routers cannot block).

Wireless Security
The Vigor 2862 Series wireless models provides several independent levels of security including encryption (up to WPA2), authentication (802.1x) and methods such as MAC address locking and DHCP fixing to restrict access to authorised users only. The Web interface lets you see how many and which clients are currently connected as well as their current bandwidth usage. An ‘instant’ block lets you disconnect a wireless user temporarily in case of query. The Wireless VLAN facility allows you to isolate wireless clients from each other or from the ‘wired’ LAN.
The Vigor 2862 wireless versions also allow guest access with password protection so that visitors can use your WiFi access, but only with a password which you set for them. When the user connects to your wireless LAN, they are firstly presented with your login screen before any Internet access is permitted. This is in addition to any encryption system you have running.

A feature central to DrayTek routers is its VPN (Virtual Private Networking) capabilities. A VPN enables you to link remote offices and branch offices back to HQ, or home-based/mobile teleworkers back to your office.

WAN Load Balancing & Backup
The Vigor 2862 features multiple methods of WAN connectivity – ADSL/VDSL, Ethernet, USB port for connection of a 3G/4G modem, optional built-in 3G/4G or (on wireless models) and Wireless WAN. The Ethernet port can connect to a second ADSL/VDSL modem (e.g. Vigor 130), a cable modem or any other Ethernet-based Internet feed.
The multiple WAN interfaces can be used either for WAN-Backup or Load-Balancing. WAN-Backup provides contingency (redundancy) in case of your primary ADSL line or ISP suffering temporary outage). Internet Traffic will be temporarily routed via the secondary Internet access. When normal service is restored to your primary line, all traffic is switched back to that.
If you don’t have VDSL or ADSL, the Ethernet WAN port can instead be used as your primary/only Internet connection (using NAT) so the same router can be used regardless of whether you have xDSL or Ethernet Internet connections currently.

Dual-band MU-MIMO Wireless
The Vigor 2862ac supports simultaneous operation of the newer 5Ghz band as well as the more common 2.4Ghz band. The 5Ghz band is far less congested so if your PCs or other devices support the 5Ghz band, you can use that. The Vigor 2862ac operate both bands at the same time, so your devices can use either. New in the Vigor 2862ac operating 802.11ac is support for MU-MIMO, TX Beam Forming, 1733Mb/s Link Rate and up to 4 spatial streams.
4×4 Multi-User-MIMO (5Ghz) – New!Up to 4 Spacial StreamsTX Beam Forming1733Mb/s Total Link Rate (5Ghz) + 300Mb/s (2.4Ghz)Dual-band (2.4/5Ghz) simultaneous wirelessBand Steering – New!Router-Assisted Client Mobility – New!Extended DFS frequency range

Runs on either ADSL or VDSL
The DSL interface connects to a ADSL or VDSL2 line. If you have a second line (of either type) you can add an additional modem (or your existing modem from your other line) to the Vigor 2862’s Ethernet WAN ports. You can set the two lines up in load balancing mode, where traffic is split across both of them, or into failover mode, where the other DSL line only kicks-in if your primary DSL line fails (or vice versa). ADSL makes a particularly good method of failover for VDSL because they are delivered differently. VDSL service is provided and powered by a cabinet in your street – that’s where the line terminates. ADSL service, on the other hand, comes all the way from your local exchange, which could be miles away and is powered from there. That means that if your street’s VDSL cabinet is damaged, its DSLAM fails or you lose power to your street, you lose VDSL, but your ADSL line comes via a different method and route, so it’s less likely that both would be affected.

Central Management with VigorACS and User Management / Authentication
The Vigor 2862 series (along with most other DrayTek routers, Access points and switches) can be centrally managed by our VigorACS central management platform.
This scalable solution provides visibility, control and reporting of your entire DrayTek product estate, ideal for dealers/SIs managing customers’ devices or any user who wants to know what’s going on with their devices. VigorACS also provides features like automated/bulk firmware updates, VPN management and alarms for connectivity or other issues.
User Management / Authentication
The Vigor 2862 has built-in user management which allows you to provide conditional internet access with Time and Data usage quotas to different users, based on their own unique login (stored in the router, or on an external Radius server).

Excellent Device
I’ve always liked DrayTek routers for the quality of build and immense amount of configurable features; a bit of a shock if you have only ever used normal domestic routers; the user manual alone runs to some 900 pages! The one thing that has always let down DrayTek products in my opinion has been the Wi-Fi. However, with the 2862ac with MUMO and Beamforming, the Wi-Fi has improved dramatically, especially on the 5GHz band, which I can now receive even at the bottom of my (admittedly not very large) garden and get over 50Mbps. With my previous ASUS router, I could barely get a signal at the same location, which would often drop out completely. They have also added a long-awaited feature, to be able to turn off the leds, not that they are terribly bright anyway, except maybe if the unit were mounted in a bedroom. Scheduling of features can be specified to the nearest minute and the unit can easily be wall-mounted. There are lots of features I shall never use, but better to have too many than not enough I would think. Content blocking is available via an annual subscription, but you can use other providers (e.g., OpenDNS) if you want a free option. This is not a cheap router, but it is a good router. Support is via e-mail only, although for more complex problems, the support staff will offer to log on remotely for further diagnosis. One tip – if you get one and you don’t need remote access, turn off the SSL VPN service to block port 443 (stops Shields Up complaining).

Expensive and Complicated, but solid so far
As other have mentioned this router has way more features than any one person is ever likely to require, and a 900 page manual written by someone who seems to have been paid by the word – lots of repetition, several obvious errors, and some items still in original Taiwanese.UK support and forum is pretty good, and so far the router has been fairly solid, although the ‘never log me out’ feature of the GUI doesn’t do that – it kicks me out at random times. The router also wants to reboot almost every time you change anything, which means you get to ‘retrain’ your ADSL line, and get a speed downgrade from BT (since your line clearly wasn’t stable at the old speed). If you don’t accept the reboot, many changes won’t actually be applied and stick .. you can’t save them up for a ‘mass reboot’ later.Despite its length the manual is, to a large extend, just copying the GUI page scripts, without explaining anything useful. If there is a tick-box saying ‘distom the doshes’ the manual won’t help you much, it’ll tell you that the box selects whether doshes are distommed or not .. better go google!router’sOne neat feature of this over my earlier router is that you can use the WiFi to connect the whole network to a phone or MiFi hotspot, in the event your dsl/adsl like goes down. However, you have to tell the router which channel (as well as SSID) to use, which sets the router’s WiFi to the same channel — and then any (smart) hotspot will take the next opportunity to change its own channel to avoid the interference. A game of tag ensues as you chase the hotpot through the channels whenever it changes them (unless you can force the hotspot to a particular channel, which is usually not the case). If you enjoy poking the innards, the router lets you put console commands in through the GUI, rather than having to Telnet in. Neat .. if slightly dangerous. That’s about 25% of the manual right there.Despite the niggles, I do like Draytek kit, and hopefully I’ll have all the options the way I want them before it’s time to upgrade again .. if you upgrade each generation there is a migration path for options (save from last router), so this one will eat a 2860 config file. If you skip generations (like me) you have to do it the hard way.Legacy support from Draytek is average to good – they keep patching firmware for many years, but hardware items go out of stock (try getting an N65 dongle for an AP800, for instance).

Very dependable modem router
Fabulous product. Bought to replace the shockingly awful BT Home Hub 6 and worked pretty much straight out of the box. Plenty of online resources to help configure it for BT Infinity (it already came supplied with the correct firmware to support BT). Absolutely rock solid connectivity and operation. No dropouts or connection losses. WiFi reach is perhaps not quite as strong as some other brands, but Iâm using the mesh offering with Vigor903 access points and it works beautifully. UI interface is very good with lots of features many of which may not apply to domestic settings but nonetheless it’s superb engineering.

Rock solid connection with great WiFi coverage would highly recommend – but get firmware update before you begin!
Reading the other reviews prior to buying was very helpful (thanks) as the device failed to connect out the box (Vodafone ADSL broadband) until I update the firmware then connected straightaway with no problems. The VDSL connection is very solid and I have found no issues running multiple devices at peak times. Compared to a basic broadband router device this is in a different league – but so it should be for the price. The Virgor 2862 has a lot of good features including network segregation with VLAN and mulitple WiFi SSID isolation options so ideal for a small business or a home office if you want to issolate groups of different devices in their own network space. This is not a basic home user device and has a lot of great advanced network and security features that for many people would be overkill. However, when trying to run a home office combined with teenagers with gaminging machines, xbox, phones and iPads and having suffered with a Sky Q box slowing everything down, the network segragation available with both cable and Wifi has certainly rectified that problem.Would highly recommend for a small business or home office but you will need to have some advanced network knowledge to get the full benifit of the many features available.
