Customers say
Customers find the smart plug easy to set up and appreciate its energy monitoring capabilities, particularly noting the invaluable insights it provides into power usage. Moreover, they consider it excellent value for money. However, the functionality receives mixed feedback, with some reporting it works well with the TAPO app while others find it worse than useless. Additionally, the plug quality and reliability are concerns, with reports of plugs dying after a short time and being prone to failure. Moreover, the switch speed is problematic, with units rapidly clicking as if turning on and off uncontrollably. Furthermore, connectivity issues are significant, with customers reporting that the Wi-Fi no longer connects and tends to lose connection.

Decent Smart Plugs that also work with Grafana/Prometheus!
These are decent little Smart Plugs from TP Link. I wanted some with energy monitoring so I could see what devices are using what power. These KP115 are vastly improved from the previous HS110 model by being much smaller so they don’t interfere/cover the switches on the AC outlets. Other than the reduction in size the rest of the features seem to be the same.Like the HS110 they are really easy to set up, essentially install the Kasa app on your mobile device, create a TP-Link account and then start adding the devices following the on screen prompts. One thing I noticed is that these still only with 2.4GHz WiFi network and do not support 5GHz.These provide a very basic form of power usage in the Kasa app. However, the usage recorded in the app is fairly limited and shows the current power, past 7 days usage and past 30 days usage. Whilst this does help you work out how much something costs to run you can’t really see the power usage in a very granular fashion or if a device is using more power at different times of the day etc.For people who are a bit geeky then it’s possible to use Grafana, Prometheus and fffonion/tplink-plug-exporter to capture realtime power usage, current, voltage etc. This allows you to draw very detailed usage graphs in Realtime or historically and is really useful. These devices also seem to lose connectivity to the network when they renew their DHCP lease and if your network’s DHCP lease time is too short (i.e. 1 hour) then these devices can often appear offline in the Kasa app. I had my DHCP server set to quite an aggressive renewal time for wireless devices and it did cause me a little grief. If you have no idea what I’m talking about then you probably don’t need to worry as your router will be issuing 1 day or 8 days leases or something!

Trusted, Safe, Smart!
I recently added the Kasa Mini Smart Plug by TP-Link to my smart home setup, and it’s been a fantastic addition. The setup was a breeze, and I didn’t encounter any issues. Just a quick tip: make sure to temporarily disable any wireless MAC filtering for both 2.4GHz and 5GHz during installation for a seamless experience. One standout feature is the energy monitoring capability. It’s great to be able to track and manage energy consumption effortlessly. The Kasa app worked perfectly and allowed me to monitor and control the plug with ease.Naming conventions are important for voice assistants like Alexa, unless you plan on setting up routines. With multiple smart devices in my home, it’s helpful to have clear names to avoid confusion. In terms of quality, the Kasa Mini Smart Plug is top-notch. I’ve had no issues with connectivity, and it has seamlessly integrated into my smart home ecosystem. If you’re looking for a smart plug with energy monitoring, this one is a solid choice. It’s reliable, easy to set up, and provides valuable insights into your energy usage.

App lacks some functionality, but the API makes up for it!
After using these for a bunch of lamps around the house (which they work extremely well for), I thought that I’d try use them to turn on/off a hydroponics pump. I wanted the pump to turn on for 2 minutes and then off for 10 repeatedly every day. The app doesn’t have the ability to do this. The schedule feature has a limit to the number of actions you can add and adding them would be unbelievably tedious anyway. I believe you can use IFTTT, but I’m not about to pay 3 whole pounds a month for something so basic! You can also integrate it with some smart home software like Home Assistant, but that requires running Home Assistant on some hardware continuously. Anyway, long story short, there is a little-known cloud API, which allows you to control Kasa devices remotely over the internet. So I was able to write a very small Azure Timer Function in python to do what I want. You can also query energy usage and a bunch of other stuff. The API is free to use. Not bad for 13 quid all-in!

Mine broke after 23 months, but I got a replacement
I bought the KP115 that I could restart my home server while away from home. The power monitoring functionality was a bonus. After 23 months my plug died. The LED wouldn’t light up and after reading the reviews on Amazon it’s quite common for them to fail after 24 months. Which is a coincidence that the warranty period is 24 months.I initially reached out to TP-Link product support using the web site and got the automated chatbot that wasted my time by going round in circles. Then I tried the old fashioned approach of telephoning product support. I was on hold for 30 minutes without being picked up. While on the hold the automated message said use livechat on the web site.So I tried live chat the human (I expect it was human) started asking questions like have I tried changing the power socket, am I aware of any power surges, …. After 10 to 15 minutes (and providing my Amazon sales invoice as a PDF), they said I’d need to register the product and create an RMA.I had to pay for the defective device to be sent (£2.99 with Royal Mail) and once they received it, they would sent a replacement. Two weeks later and my replacement has arrived. I doubt it’s going to last 24 months, but at least I feel a huge sense of achievement by managing to get a replacement without banging my head against a wall.
