Kinivo BTD-400 Bluetooth 4.0 USB adapter – For Windows 8/ Windows 7/ Vista
Arrived a day early, and once it was plugged in there was no more to be done, having downloaded the driver from their website. As soon as you connect something for pairing, windows finds the driver and puts an icon on your desktop for any necessary configuring options applicable to the type of device connected, so you go to your desktop for one click connection & configuring options. I’m very content & happy to have this item.I am taking the opportunity to update this review after having had a unit apparently fail on me. I contacted the makers, who could not have been more helpful, with advice via e-mail. When their first sugestion didn’t work. they immediately sent me a replacement post-haste.upon fitting the replacement unit, the light remained on until the drivers finished loading, and then went out. My attempts to see what I could find out from Microsoft, and other user forums revealed that Microsoft do not appear to care if you have problems with your hardware, just upgrade to the latest windows and all your problems will be solved. yeah, right……Back to the manufacturers, who sent right back a further e-mail suggestion, (basically, a full uninstall and re-install) which worked and the unit is sitting in its USB port working nicely. I have a sneaking suspicion that various windows and other third party driver updates may be playing a part in the fun & games. I was running the unit in a windows Vista PC, and could not find out anything specific about the registry settings relating to the Bluetooth software, but there are a number of very helpful websites out there who have what they claim to be the solution to a type 43 errorcode in windows (which is what windows was reporting to me as being the problem, but without any further explanation….)and offers you a free download to scan your system. Of course, the fix requires a licence for the sum of about $100.00 USD. Soooooo helpful, the yanks……..The bottom line, is that this little unit will give you great functionality, if you need it in a PC that does not have bluetooth already installed, and do so at a very acommodating price. I can also thoroughly recommend the manufacturers helpfulness if there’s a problem.

Ubuntu user 22.04 – mixed results
Never tested on Windows/Mac as not interested in that. I purchased this for the purpose of getting my bluetooth aukey earphones working with Teams and Zoom on Ubuntu 22.04. Simple plug and play for Ubuntu(?). Well ubuntu 22.04 found the adapter without issue. Connecting my earphones to it – no problem. I had to go in and change the sound setting to be aukey for speakers and mic.first test: played iplayer thru firefox – no sound. even though the sound bar was telling me that sound was being played by iplayed I could not hear it. Played around with all the sounds setting – yes the test worked I could hear the drip/bark test sound. iplayer nope.2rd test – the self test with TEAMS. – could not get to hear the self test and mic never recorded anything. checked in the sounds tab in ubuntu – I could hear the drip/bark etc3rd test – tried zoom. setup a meeting with my iphone as the other user. Could never hear any sound from the aukey earphones and mic sound was not heard on my iphone. – checked the sounds tab in ubuntu – I could hear the drip/bark etc4th test – played a movie thru vlc. Had to select correct source on vlc – this workedSummary – never got the mic to work. Only got the sound to work with vlc and not zoom or teams.I repeated the above tests with another set of bluetooth earphones and got the same results. So it wasnt the earphones.I did not test the file transfer. I did get it to pair with an iphone/ipad but did no more testing than that. For my needs – this bluetooth dongle fails. I returned it and purchased a usb headphone.

Not Suitable for Linux, Raspberry Pi or Home Assistant
The firmware is not correct for Linux or a Raspberry Pi. Don’t buy this it’s not what it says and it is a fair amount of work to update it, certainly do not buy it for Home Assistant by the Asus USB-BT500.

    great through wall Class1 performance
Having experienced a couple of Class 2 devices which lost connection with just my hand or a coffee table in the way, it was great to find this device can easily go effortlessly through an internal brick wall. I don’t think this is clear enough in the device description, but the Broadcom chip set is Class 2.I also found that I can connect to all my BT devices, phone, Palm PDA and Bluetooth audio adapter. Not the case with my previous dongles. The software was slightly problematic. I had forgotten that with the Widcom/Broadcom stack you must not plug in the dongle to start with or even when asked, which results in the dongle not being detectable by the software. Despite this Windows XP was perfectly happy, recognising the device in Device Manager and reporting no problems. So I had to remove the sofware and re-install, plugging the dongle in when it had all finished. Windows then completed the process and all was well. Its about time Broadcom updated the manual to reflect this problem, which has been around for years.Incidently I had downloaded the latest update from the Broadcom website, but found it impossible to use this at the outset, because it expected the dongle to be installed already. So I used the version 5.6.0.7700 on the supplied CD. I am still on this which surprisingly is a bit clunky, so should perhaps upgrade. However not knowing what the latest version is like puts me off. However this issue shouldn’t put anyone off the device which always has a good solid connection to many devices.

    Works flawlessly on Windows 11
Works absolutely flawless on Windows 11, well worth buying if you have issues with Realtek drivers on Windows 11 like I did with multiple BT adapters. This has a Broadcom chipset.
