Enter autophagy, an ancient mechanism built into our cells that eliminates toxic materials, initiates fat-burning, and protects cells against stress. Best-known for being triggered by intermittent fasting, the complex process not only slows down the ageing process, but optimises biological function as a whole, staving off all manner of disease – from diabetes to dementia – and affording us the healthy lifespan we never thought possible.
So how can we activate autophagy? Itโs as simple as flipping a switch. The Switch unpacks the revolutionary research on the body’s natural process for maintaining health and youthfulness, as well as the โdialโ that controls it. Backed by a synthesis of the data, and with a foreword by renowned Harvard geneticists Drs. George Church and David Sinclair, The Switch not only decodes the science of autophagy, but also teaches readers how to control it and benefit from its profound impact.

Must read
The more I read it the more I like it.Obviously the main point of the book is the switch – mTOR and authopagy. The book is big on intermittent fasting and keto diet.Chapter 9 is extremely useful: it has practical recommendations about what to eat or not to eat to implement the ideas explained earlier.I think it is the most impactful book I read in the last couple of years. It is going to make a difference in my life, as I am going to incorporate many of its ideas.

Best book on the longevity
in my eyes is the most serious book I read on the subject . ( and I read quite a few , Aubrey ,kurzweil etc) I wasnรขยยt aware on James clement perspective on the subject . Which make a lot of sense to me. Will continue to follow the author work.

Dubious jump from evidence to opinion
The poor review which lumped together red and processed meat made me doubt all the other research in this book. I was really enjoying the writing style of this book and pleased to get a better understanding of autophagy. However when I got to the chapter about redmeat and he smoothly lumped together redmeat with processed meat I realised I could not read any more. There is absolutely no reference made to the work of Nina Teicholz or Zoe Harcombe And this made me suspect all the rest of the work in the book. Itรขยยs so important that the pioneers stay up-to-date and offer a balanced view. I have no idea if the research in to read and process meat is based on epidemiological studies are you questionnaire design or other more useful sources of information. Sadly for me itรขยยs made it a total waste of money.

Was not expecting such rich content
This book is recommended by a friend of mine. Looking at cover I was not expecting such a full, informative book; each and every page full of useful information. Strongly, recommended.

He says,”It pains me to watch someone order a plateful of fluffy buttermilk pancakes doused with lots of syrup and a side of bacon, followed by an order of cheesy pizza. Yes, I have witnessed this, and all I see is diabetes on a plate with heart disease for dessert. We deserve better.”So true, unfortunately.Drop ALL seed oils and you are ahead of the race, the human race. Find Prof. Knobbe for seed oil info.

Comprehensive body of work on how switching the body from anabolic to catabolic states, in the process activating from autophagy, can really do wonders for our health and longevity. Recommendations in the book are definitly worth implementing.

That’s not how science works. The thousands of science papers he ingested don’t support his conclusions. It’s interesting to read about the mechanisms, but animal studies do NOT directly translate to human. The only way to know if a particular diet will work is to do the study in humans. Until then, it’s really more accurate to say that we just don’t know, and that’s ok. Also, science works by the entire scientific community gradually coming to consensus on each issue. I guarantee that the current consensus is not to go on a ketogenic diet. If it was, then my doctor would be advising me to do so. If there were proven health benefits, then all doctors would clearly be recommending ketogenic diets. I know James means well, but he’s a true outlier and you should firmly reject his advice. For example, if you follow his advice, you will most likely lose muscle mass and fall into disability sooner from sarcopenia.

A very informative and easy read. I highly recommend this book. Some great insights into slowing aging and leading a healthy life. Midway into my 60s, I am definitely feeling the passage of time and an aging body.I definitely think radical life extension for those who want it is not too far away in the future. I think Clement’s understanding about our body and maximizing health are second to none.Seeing the names of the folks who have reviewed and endorsed this book has also impressed the heck out of me: George Church, David Sinclair, David Perlmutter, Dave Asprey, Durk Pearson, Steve Horvath, and many others.I definitely plan on sending copies to friends and family members.
