A Brilliant Wireless Switch That Just Works, Even When the Internet Doesnât
Iâll admit it, Iâm slightly obsessed with lighting gadgets, especially the ones that are wireless and simple to control. Over the years Iâve tried quite a few smart solutions, but one thing that always frustrated me was how many of them rely heavily on the internet. When the connection drops (which has happened more times than Iâd like), some devices suddenly become far less cooperative.Thatâs what made this ZLinkStar self powered wireless light switch such a pleasant surprise.First off, the build quality feels reassuringly solid. The switch panel has a firm, tactile press to it and feels well made rather than flimsy. The receiver unit is compact and straightforward to wire into the live and neutral of the light fitting and once thatâs done youâre good to go. I also like the fact that the switch itself is self powered, converting the kinetic energy from pressing the button into the signal it sends to the receiver, no batteries to worry about replacing. What really sold it to me is the RF signal control. Because it doesnât rely on Wi-Fi, it continues to work perfectly even if the internet goes down. The range seems excellent too, and the signal has been very reliable in my experience.Installation was simple, and the flexibility is fantastic. For years my kitchen only had one switch by the back door, far from ideal when trying to find it in the dark while navigating around my two dogs, who like to lounge across the kitchen like teenagers on randomly placed plastic beds. Now Iâve placed the wireless switch at the other end of the kitchen, effectively giving me a second light switch exactly where I always wanted one.Itâs a small change, but it has made everyday life noticeably easier.Overall, Iâm very impressed with the combination of solid construction, clever self powered design and excellent value for money. If you want a reliable wireless lighting control that doesnât depend on Wi-Fi and is easy to install, this is a very practical solution.

Light switch that requires no wiring, but the receiver does require wiring.
This device is marketed as wireless and no wiring needed, this is a bit misleading, wiring is required. There is two parts to this device, the receiver and the switch. You do need to wire in the receiver to the light, the no wire part is to do with the switch, you do not need to wire in the switch. The switch works with kinetic energy, just click it and it sends a kinetic signal to the receiver that that turns on and off the light. It is quite clever, but the fact that you do need to wire in the receiver to the light, does not constituteno wires.Where I think this works best and for the mass majority of people would be fitting lights in a hut or something to avoidhaving to add in more wiring to the switch. But bear in mind you still have to have the light fitted to the main electricity wiring so it lights up. If you watch the product video it makes it more clear. And lets be honest any house I have seen that has lights, already have a light switch in the wall.Possibly this product may shine if someone wants another light switch in a different location, it is far cheaper than paying an electrician or fitting the wires yourself. But for most people they will be content enough to have the already existing light switches where they already are.Its a niche product, it is clever though, the price it is marketed for is ok, its not great value, but its ok value.

Easy to install, no configuration needed, looks nice
This kit was very simple to install. Power in, power out with just four points to wire up, the input and output wires that are clearly labelled. I ended up not even needing to looking at instructions. The two switches come with double sided adhesive to allow for easy installation if screwless is preferred, however there are screw holes which after removing the cap can easily secure although it was very difficult to get the front cover off. I feared damaging the plastic. The switches look nice and do not toggle, more like spring back and feel responsive. No configuration was needed. Once wired pressing one of the switches the light turned on without delay.I have a staircase with a light half way, but when it gets dark nobody thought while designing it that it’s going to be difficult to get to the light switch that’s half way when it’s pitch black. Hooking this up to the light and installing the switches at the entrances have solved this issue perfectly. There’s many other applications for this. Like hooking up some custom lighting to workstations or controlling LED’s strips without the need for expensive work just to have the switches in the right places.
