Makes dumb things seem smart (even me)
Picked up two of these to add a couple of extractor fans to our HomeKit setup. The fans in our bathroom and utility room are switched with the lights but we wanted to put Philips Hue bulbs in these rooms. As the Hue bulbs require permanent power this would mean that the fans would also be permanently on. By wiring one of these behind each of the fan isolator switches I now have two new smart fans that can be controlled via HomeKit.I should note that these aren’t compatible with HomeKit out of the box but this is easily remedied by running Homebridge / HOOBS on your network and adding these Sonoff Minis there. I run HOOBS on my Synology NAS which works well for me.Wiring them up was very simple, in my setup it was two wires in and two wires out. If you’re putting these in a back box like I have then make sure it’s not a metal one (I assume it’s to not interfere with the Wi-Fi signal) and you might struggle to fit these into a shallow back box. It’s worth putting them somewhere that you can easily access in future as there is a Wi-Fi pairing button that needs to be pressed on first setup.I’m hoping these turn out to be fit and forget. I have no reason to doubt that they will be.

    Easy to fit, works great
Now I just have to find a suitable ceiling rose to cover it.

Keeps dropping connection and becoming unresponsive
Device keeps going out of connection and becoming unresponsive and no way to put them in pairing mode without resetting them. I have received a full refund for the item and a great customer support from Rita who has offered to update the firmware if I can open the light junction box again and try to reset the device. Since this will need electrician to do this, I’ll contact SonOff customer service again when connection is dropped and have to get electrician onsite again. I have reviewed my rating because of the great customer service.

    How to control with Python
I have these wired up to external security lights. I then have a PC running BlueIris security software and when a camera triggers it called a piece of Python that turns the security light on.To save others the time. This is the Python :-import jsonimport requestsimport sysstate = sys.argv [2]params = {‘deviceid’: “”,’data’: {‘switch’: state}}payload = {‘request’: json.dumps(params) }payload = json.dumps(params)url = “http://192.168.1.9:8081/zeroconf/switch”r = requests.post(url, data=payload)result = r.text # or depends what the return is..——of course change the IP address to your switch’s.To pair the device I wired it up to a piece of flex (like an old kettle lead with the end cut off). That way you can get it all working in the comfort of your home. To Pair :-Press button on Sonoff and hold for 5 seconds. The flashing light will change. Release and press again for 5 seconds until it blinks quickly. Then on a mobile device connect to the INSTEAD232132 wire (or similarly named – password is 12345678). Then in a browser go to 10.10.7.1 and follow instructions to link it onto your home wifi. Thats it.Hope that helps someone – took me some time to get it sorted.

    Convert existing lighting
Have a few of these over the house. Work great with existing lights and switches. There is just a live and neutral feed, live and neutral load to the light and then 2 connections to monitor the switch. You can easily adapt the wiring in a ceiling rose or light fitting.Had a couple fail on me recently making me think the build quality is not the greatest but I can’t find an equivalent on amazon.

    Works really well
Have an external light and an existing switch by back door, but wanted a second switch by side door, but didn’t want to run all the wires to link the switches. Bought 2 devices, attached one to the existing switch and the second one on my new switch, powered, but not physically connected to an output. Set up on IFTTT so that if side switch turns on, the back switch turns on, and if side switch turns off, back switch turns off. Works well. Thing I was most pleased with is that it looks for a change in the physical switch, not it’s actual on/off position, so if the lights are turned on at one switch, I can turn off at the second

    Home Assistant
Got these after much research, the installation is pretty straightforward. The 1st switch had negative to the socket and the other is in the ceiling rose. One tip! if your installing in the ceiling rose consider changing the rose lid for a deeper one… they are available and will mean you don’t need to stick the switch in the ceiling void. In my setup… i don’t use the Zigbee usb hub, the device acts as a wifi access point! once connected I updated the SSID and password, setup a static IP address on my IoT vlan. worked 1st time… been running over my wifi with NO issues or restarts… I will use these moving forward and have already brought 4 more. Great product, great integration into my network and works seamlessly with Home Assistant.

    Does not connect to wifi
Absolutely useless at connecting to wifi and being configured with the app. The Sonoff mini is easy enough to physically install, simple wiring and easy to use screw terminals. It’s a compact package too so easy to hide within a light fitting. However when it came to setting up the WiFi functionality, I found it absolutely impossible to detect and configure using my phone. The eWeLink app is poorly designed and failed to find the unit at least a dozen times. I tried switching off the 5ghz WiFi in my router and tried another smartphone, no joy. It did pick up the unit once and I thought, “yay! It’s actually working!” But then after I cut power to the unit to refit the light fitting, the settings were either lost or could not connect again. Rubbish product, would not recommend. I think I’ll switch to the Shelly plus 1 instead.

Device measures 1 5/8 x 1.5/8 x 3/4 inches. Neutral needed. Tight fit behind a switch. Output voltage is the same as input. no choice. Configuration is straight forward. #18 AWG is the largest wire that will fit. Solid wire or soldered will reduce chance of a short. Alexa picked it right up. One of the better relays I have used. Too bad it is so thick.

It was very simple and easy to setup. I had wire & switch from my desk lamp and I reused them for the testing. The instructions for wiring were clear. Just needed to make sure that the phase & neutral was correct (use a tester). Once powered up, I scanned the code using my iPhone and within 2 minutes, it was ready for use.
