Perfect affordable start to my home automation journey
I decided to dip my toes into home automation after getting a HomePod mini. Since Iâm already in the Apple ecosystem, I wanted something HomeKit-compatible to start withâbut I quickly realized most HomeKit-compatible products are priced much higher than their Alexa or Google Home counterparts. After a lot of research, I came across this Tapo smart bulb, and itâs been a fantastic find!
Pros:
Easy setup: Thanks to Matter compatibility, connecting this bulb to HomeKit was a breeze. Just screw it in, switch it on, and it blinks three times. Then, scan the Matter QR code in the Home app, and within seconds, itâs paired. Assign it to a room, and youâre good to go. Super simple!
Bright and responsive: The bulb is very bright, especially on the warm yellow setting. Other colors are slightly dimmer, which might be due to the nature of colored lights compared to white. Still, theyâre perfectly usable and look great.
Affordable: At £9.49 per bulb, this is an incredible value for a HomeKit-compatible smart bulb. You donât have to spend a fortune to get started with home automation.
Reliable: After a month of use, Iâve had no issues with connectivity or performance. The bulb responds quickly to voice commands via Siri and works seamlessly in the Home app.
Cons (minor):
As mentioned, the brightest setting is on the warm yellow light. Colors like red, green, or blue are noticeably dimmer, but I guess thatâs pretty common with smart bulbs.
Overall experience:
I was so impressed that I ended up buying three more of these bulbs for other rooms in my house. Theyâve been running smoothly for a month now, and Iâm already planning my next steps in expanding my home automation setup with more Tapo devices and sensors as soon as they release Matter compatible versions.
If youâre looking for a budget-friendly way to get started with smart lighting and HomeKit, this bulb is a no-brainer. Highly recommended!
I have added some automation with Door Sensor from Aqara and now the bulb turns on as soon as I open the door. No delay.

Great product and software
Have bought multiple of these bulbs for my home due to their value for money and great build quality. They are also compatible with Alexa and most smart phones although I use iphone. You can also set up Siri/ automation on iphone to control them.
the bulbs are silent and dimmable.
You can also obviously change them to a wide array of colors and temperatures including warm and cool.

Occasional connectivity issues aside these are good cost effective bulbs. Usually the connection problems are easily solvable by reconnecting to the network. Nice and simple bit of kit

Extremely customisable and very convenient – Has made my life easier
I was already using the Tapo App for multiple other smart plugs and devices, so they were the obvious choice for my first venture into smart lighting. The Tapo App is very easy to use, the devices normally easy to set up, and the customisable options offer a great deal of convenience, (though some of the automation takes a deeper dive into settings to set up).
I was NOT disappointed by this Tapo smart bulb!
The customisation options are virtually endless. You can pick from millions of colours and adjust the brightness until it suits your tastes, then save it as a Preset for instant recall.
Where it really shines (pun intended) for me is the white light features available. You can change the ‘colour temperature’ of the white light from 2500K (very warm light – close to that of a candle flame) right up to 6500K (very cool, bright white, clinical light), then adjust the brightness from 100% right down to just 1%, and save the settings as one of your presets.
I liked this so much in my Lounge that I bought more tapo Smart bulbs for other rooms and have set automations for arriving home, (which turns on the lights in the hall area), and leaving home, (which turns off all lights).
There are also security options which allow you to set an ‘away’ mode which turns the light on & off at random, (to save energy you can set this to only happen between chosen times of day or night, or it can be set to start at sunset & stop at sunrise.
There are so many excellent and very usable features of this bulb & the Tapo App which makes it an excellent buy. WHen used with other Tapo lights, devices and smart plugs you can create complex automations that make life easier.
I highly recommend this tapo Smart Bulb for rooms you want colour options, and for ones you only want white light they do those too!

Best new “matter” bulbs I have tested

Really pleased with these new bulbs from Tapo. Unlike some examples from other manufacturers, these are properly matter-compliant (with a suitable controller device, of course.)
The bulbs came well-packaged, with adequate instructions and the matter codes shown clearly. I scanned the label and Smartthings picked the bulbs up immediately. I made sure to give the 2.4gHz wi-fi details at this point, and installation completed correctly at the first try. A great improvement on the old âmultiple resets and will it work this time?) procedures.
Build quality seems good. The light output is about right for the advertised 75w equivalence (on white) but, as always, colour luminance is much less. On test, I was also pleased to find that the white colour temperature is very close to metered values. After a week, we found good service reliability with no network drop-out at any time.
The price (discounted on Amazon UK at the time of purchase) is very attractive so we will be getting a few more as spares.
Conclusion: Highly recommended.

Not very bright but..
Does its job and connects to phone and alexa easily. i got this because the website was bragging about how bright it is aaaand it’s not. The cold white is just bland. I wanted this so I can do puzzles, legos and crafting and avoid getting a headlamp or a table lamp, but no, it’s not what I expected.
