Brilliant – the neatest and most reliable wifi plug I’ve found so far, and at a great price.
This review relates exclusively to the Tapo P110M Smart Plug, with Energy Monitoring with MATTER, and not to any other similar TAPO product.I’ve been using wifi smart plugs as part of my home automation (using the Apple Home app) for several years now, and they have presented me with several problems: HomeKit-certified plugs are very expensive, and whilst many cheaper devices are sold as working with HomeKit, in my experience ANY device that is not HomeKit-certified will from time – and unpredictably! – go into the dreaded “not responding mode”, which can be very disruptive, and can last from a few minutes to several days (in one case, 2 weeks!)!. I have used smart plugs from a range of manufacturers, including Tapo, all claiming to “work with HomeKit”, and they have been a disaster. Many need the manufacturer’s app to be installed in order to work at all (which I’m not prepared to do, for personal privacy reasons – too many of these apps send far too much information about you back to China or wherever) or must be connected via HomeBridge, but every non-certified smart plug I have used, without exception, has gone unresponsive at some time or another – usually at the most inconvenient moment! These P110M units are the first I have found that are just rock-solid reliable, and seem to have got around the HomeKit compatibility issue by their use of Matter. I have over the past few months replaced all my old smart plugs (about a dozen of them) with these P110M units, and have eliminated all my “not responding” problems. As well as all that, this unit is very compact compared to most other smart switches on the market, and works with Apple Home out of the box – there is no need to install any other software to make them work! – and for me these devices are as near perfect as I have been able to find – and at about £10 each are an absolute steal!

Itâs great to have one plug that works across different platforms.Compact Design: The design is sleek and compact, so it doesnât block neighboring outlets. I can use it with lamps, chargers, and more without any issues.Reliable Performance: Iâve been using it for a few weeks now, and it has performed flawlessly. Relay failed at 12 months, TP-Link customer service not great
Firstly I have to say when working this is a great smart plug, keenly priced and compatible with pretty much any smart home due to being matter certified. It is worth noting that currently only on/off functionality is available via matter with energy monitoring requiring the Tapo app, or a more specialised set up such as Home Assistant. I have been using these plugs with Home Assistant and since TP-Link merged the Kasa and Tapo brands these Tapo plugs work with the Kasa integration, meaning full access to energy monitoring. Despite my first plug failing at 1 year and a couple of days they are probably still my go to smart plug. With regards to the failure, like all smart plugs these use relays which are more prone to failure than manufacturers would like you to know. One day the plug just became stuck on for ever more, the LED would change and the status within the Tapo app and HA changed, but the connected appliance remained fully powered. This particular plug was used with a 1.2kW heater during the winter and a 45W fan during the summer both of which are well within the specified supported load limits of 2.5kW for a heater and 120W for a fan.Being over a year – albeit only by a couple of days – since purchase I assumed Amazon wouldnât be interested (more on that in a moment) so contacted TP-Link as they provide a 2 year warranty for all smart home products. Firstly I had to create an account on their website, then register the product, which was a little convoluted but okay. I was then able to raise a support request after which I was asked to provide photos and a video showing the fault which was a bit of a nuisance but I duly provided these. Finally once they had all my personal details I discovered it was going to cost me money! If I was willing to send it back and then wait until they received and checked it out before sending me a replacement I would have to foot the postage bill, so approx £3.50. If I wanted to speed things up they would send one right away but take a deposit of the purchase price (refunded on receipt of faulty device) plus a non-refundable £6, in addition to the £3.50 to post it to them, so £9.50, almost the price of the plug! I was not impressed.I decided to then try my luck and contacted Amazon customer service on live chat. After typing literally once sentence to say it had developed a fault, the support assistant apologised, emailed me a pre-paid returns label and offered a full refund. My recommendation is buy these from Amazon and donât be tempted to purchased them direct from TP-Link. Stomaching the return cost might not be so bad on an expensive product, but on low value smart home devices the time and cost involved to get a replacement is not worth it.
